In a heart-stopping turn of events at Rally Portugal, Ott Tanak’s dreams of a World Rally Championship victory were shattered by a critical power steering failure, propelling Sébastien Ogier to the front of the pack. Tanak, who had been leading the rally since Friday’s stage 2, was in a neck-and-neck battle with Ogier until disaster struck on stage 17, causing him to plummet to third place overall.

Despite facing challenges like a left rear puncture, Tanak displayed remarkable resilience and even managed to extend his lead over Ogier with three consecutive stage wins. However, the power steering failure in stage 17 proved to be a game-changer, forcing Tanak to struggle through the remaining stages and hand the lead to Ogier.

Ogier, a seasoned veteran and six-time Rally Portugal winner, now finds himself in the lead, with a 27.6-second advantage over his Toyota teammate Kalle Rovanperä. The competition remains fierce, with Rovanperä battling to regain ground after a tough fight for the final podium spot with Takamoto Katsuta.

The rally also saw Thierry Neuville of Hyundai making impressive moves, overtaking Katsuta to claim fourth place. Meanwhile, Sami Pajari showcased a flawless performance to secure sixth place, with championship leader Elfyn Evans facing setbacks after a setup change went awry.

As the Rally Portugal heads into its final day with six more stages to go, the stakes are higher than ever. Will Ogier maintain his lead and secure yet another victory, or will the remaining contenders stage a comeback in a bid for glory? Rally fans are on the edge of their seats as the thrilling conclusion unfolds.
