Sebastien Buemi’s costly mistake shatters hopes for victory at Formula E Mexico City E-Prix

Sebastien Buemi’s Heartbreak: A Costly Error Derails His Mexico E-Prix Dream

In a dramatic twist of fate that has left fans and analysts buzzing, Sebastien Buemi’s aspirations for glory at the Mexico City E-Prix crumbled due to a costly miscalculation on the track. The Envision Racing star, who started the race in pole position after a thrilling qualifying session, now finds himself lamenting a golden opportunity lost.

Buemi was handed the top spot on the grid thanks to Taylor Barnard’s unfortunate penalty for exceeding track limits during the final duel. Hopes were high as race day unfolded at the iconic Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, but disaster struck almost immediately. The seasoned driver suffered a catastrophic start, veering straight into the Turn 1 escape road, which sent him plummeting to the rear of the field.

“I should have just accepted P2 after Turn 1,” Buemi reflected, clearly frustrated. “I just had a slow pull away compared to Barnard and braked too late in the dust.” The 37-year-old’s initial misjudgment marred what began as a promising weekend, ultimately leaving him to finish a disheartening 17th in a race that was clinched by Citroen’s Nick Cassidy.

However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. Buemi showcased remarkable resilience, clawing his way back to seventh position by the 18th lap, thanks to his strategic energy management and attacking mode. Just when it seemed like a comeback was within reach, fate dealt him another cruel blow — a puncture forced an unscheduled pit stop, dashing any hopes of salvaging points. “Obviously, a bit unlucky with that, but it’s always tough to accept when you had such a good car – I had a great car,” he lamented.

For Buemi, the disappointment runs deeper than just this race. His team, Envision, has struggled to find consistent success in the competitive world of Formula E, with Buemi finishing in the top 10 in only half of the races last season. “I don’t remember the last time we’ve been that competitive,” he admitted, reflecting on his team’s recent history. His last victory, a distant memory, was at the 2025 Monaco E-Prix.

Despite the frustration of leaving Mexico empty-handed, Buemi is determined to focus on the positives. “It gives good confidence for the rest of the season, even if it was just a weekend,” he concluded, setting his sights on the upcoming Miami race with renewed vigor.

As the racing world watches, one thing is for certain: Sebastien Buemi’s fierce determination and talent will keep him in the spotlight, and fans can expect a fierce comeback from this passionate competitor in the races to come.
