Before Sebastian Vettel, a four-time World Champion, made his mark at Red Bull, he had his heart set on driving for the prestigious team Ferrari, as revealed by Mario Andretti, the 1978 World Champion. The surprising revelation emerged during a casual conversation between Andretti and Vettel at an airport.
Vettel’s journey in Formula 1 started with a notable debut at BMW Sauber, which earned him a swift recruitment to Red Bull’s junior team, Toro Rosso. His time at Toro Rosso was marked by significant success, including a stunning victory at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix. By the next year, Vettel had graduated to being a driver for Red Bull, leading to a streak of victories, winning four consecutive World Championships from 2010 to 2013. This remarkable achievement was later mirrored by Max Verstappen at Red Bull.
However, it seems that even before Vettel made his debut as Red Bull’s World Champion, his sights were set on a future with Ferrari. This ambition was ultimately fulfilled in 2015 when Vettel joined Ferrari, going on to win 14 grand prix with the team.
The Formula 1 landscape continues to evolve, with Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time World Champion, being the latest addition to Ferrari. When queried about Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, and how he would fare alongside Vettel’s former team-mate, Charles Leclerc, Andretti shared the intriguing anecdote about Vettel’s early ambition.
“Quite honestly, I think it’s awesome,” Andretti shared with Motorsport.com, regarding Hamilton’s move to Ferrari. He went on to explain that Hamilton, who had previously tasted victory with McLaren and Mercedes, is at a point in his career where he yearns to make a mark with Ferrari. This aspiration, according to Andretti, is something shared by many Formula 1 drivers.
Andretti recalled his encounter with Vettel in 2009 at Bahrain, shortly after Vettel’s move from Toro Rosso to Red Bull. Vettel confessed to Andretti that his ultimate professional ambition was to drive for Ferrari, a statement that surprised Andretti, given that Vettel had just secured a top-tier role at Red Bull.
Hamilton’s move to Ferrari has raised anticipation among fans, who are eager to see how he will match up against Leclerc, a seasoned driver. While Hamilton faces skepticism after a challenging final season with Mercedes, Andretti believes that Ferrari stands to gain the most from this new driver pairing.
With Hamilton’s arrival at Ferrari, Carlos Sainz made way and subsequently agreed on a multi-year deal with Williams. Regardless of the various moves and changes, one thing remains clear: in the high-stakes world of Formula 1, ambitions run as fast as the cars, and only time will reveal how these drivers will shape the future of the sport.
