Sebastian Vettel Weighs in on Lewis Hamilton’s Transition to Ferrari Ahead of Australian Grand Prix Debut

As the anticipated Australian Grand Prix approaches, the racing world buzzes with speculation surrounding Lewis Hamilton’s debut for Ferrari. The seven-time World Champion’s winter transfer from Mercedes to Ferrari marks a substantial shift in his esteemed career, with only one other team move in his past when he swapped from McLaren to Mercedes in 2013.

The transition from Mercedes to Ferrari is not just a change of colors for Hamilton, but it also signifies a shift in culture, according to Sebastian Vettel. The former Red Bull racer, who had an impressive streak of four consecutive World Championships from 2010 to 2013, feels that adapting to a new work culture is the most formidable challenge for Hamilton.

Vettel, who himself made the switch to Ferrari in 2015, had a successful run with 14 victories over five full seasons. However, he fell short of securing a fifth title, losing closely contested battles to Hamilton in 2017 and 2018.

Vettel, who grew up admiring the legendary Michael Schumacher, found his transition to Ferrari to be different due to his personal connection. In a recent interview with Wide World of Sports, he stated, “It’s big. Anybody who changes team, it’s a big move. New people you work with is probably the biggest one. It’s a different culture. I’m not sure Lewis had the same dream, but I think it’s special for anyone who gets the chance to step into the red car.”

Vettel, who retired from racing at the end of 2022 after a brief stint with Aston Martin, recently returned to the racing scene at the Race of Champions exhibition event in Sydney. It is yet uncertain if he will journey to Melbourne to witness the opening race of the F1 2025 season this weekend.

In a fortuitous turn of events, Hamilton will be working with Vettel’s former race engineer, Riccardo Adami, in his first season with Ferrari. Adami, who previously worked with Carlos Sainz from 2021 to 2024, received a glowing endorsement from Vettel. Hamilton reportedly sought Vettel’s advice and impressions of Adami following his move to Ferrari.

Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari has been an eye-opener. In a press conference following the launch of Ferrari’s SF-25 car last month, Hamilton revealed his struggles and excitement in adjusting to life at Ferrari. He highlighted the differences in the car’s setup, the unique terminology, and the challenges in adapting to a different software and car construction. He also expressed his optimism about leveraging his experience to adapt to these changes while keeping his driving style intact.

As the Australian Grand Prix draws near, Hamilton’s performance in the red car will undoubtedly be the focus of attention. His ability to adapt to Ferrari’s culture and car setup will be put to the test, a challenge that he seems more than ready to face.
