SEAT & CUPRA has started series production of battery systems at its Martorell facility, marking a decisive step towards the electrification of the factory and the launch of the first electric models produced at this site.
The batteries now assembled will equip the CUPRA Raval and the Volkswagen ID. Polo, two electric models that will mark the new industrial phase of the Spanish factory.
Martorell enters the electric era
The start of this production comes just a few months after the inauguration of the battery factory and represents the final stage before the start of series production of the CUPRA Raval, scheduled for this summer.
According to Markus Haupt, CEO of SEAT & CUPRA, this moment marks a decisive phase in the company’s transformation, reinforcing Martorell’s role as a flexible unit, ready to produce electric, hybrid, and combustion vehicles.
Common technology for greater scale and efficiency
The battery systems utilize the Unified Cell technology from the Volkswagen Group, a global platform designed to ensure greater flexibility, speed of production, and adaptation to different brands and segments.
Each system integrates cells responsible for energy storage and electronic components that control overall functioning. The so-called E Box, considered the “brain” of the battery, is produced at the El Prat facility, which underwent an industrial transformation process to manufacture components intended for electric vehicles.
Intensive and Highly Automated Production
The factory has the capacity to produce up to 1,200 batteries per day, equivalent to about 300,000 units per year, with a pace of one battery every 45 seconds.
The process begins with the logistics of components, followed by two parallel phases: electrical pre-assembly and the integration of cells through cell-to-pack technology, which allows for greater system efficiency.
Daily, about 3,600 battery modules are produced, involving hundreds of thousands of welding points. After assembly, each unit undergoes rigorous quality testing before being automatically sent to the vehicle production line.
Sustainable and Highly Specialized Unit
The facility occupies an area of 64,000 square meters and employs about 500 specialized workers. The factory also integrates 11,000 solar panels, responsible for about 70% of the energy used in the production process.
This investment was realized in less than two years, marking a crucial milestone in the industrial transformation of the company.
Iberian Peninsula strengthens its role in European electrification
With this new production capacity, SEAT & CUPRA reinforces the contribution of the Iberian Peninsula as a strategic center for electromobility in Europe.
As part of the Volkswagen Group’s Electric Urban Car Family project, four electric models are set to be produced in Spain, with the CUPRA Raval inaugurating this new generation.
A new cycle for the brand
The year 2026 thus marks the beginning of a new phase for SEAT & CUPRA, with the start of production of 100% electric vehicles in Martorell.
The commitment to electrification, combined with local battery production, positions the company as one of the key players in the transition to electric mobility in the European market.
