Scott Dixon Dominates IndyCar Test Despite Rain at Indianapolis

In a thrilling display of speed and skill, Scott Dixon and the Chip Ganassi Racing team emerged as the leaders during Thursday’s intense IndyCar Series test at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. Despite the unpredictable weather with rain showers threatening the proceedings, drivers managed to push through, logging crucial dry laps that provided valuable data and insights.

Dixon, piloting the No. 9 Honda, set the benchmark with a blistering lap time of 1m09.966s across 90 laps, showcasing his unmatched prowess on the track. His teammate, championship frontrunner Alex Palou, wasn’t far behind, securing the second-fastest time in the No. 10 Honda with a 1m10.129s lap. The competition was fierce as Juncos Hollinger Racing’s Conor Daly claimed third place with his No. 76 Chevy clocking in at 1m10.180s. Not to be outdone, Kyffin Simpson, also from Juncos Hollinger, kept the pressure on with a 1m10.222s in his No. 8 Honda.

The top six was rounded out by AJ Foyt Racing’s David Malukas in the No. 4 Chevy, who recorded a 1m10.272s, followed by Santino Ferrucci in the No. 14 Chevy, completing his best lap at 1m10.388s. Dale Coyne Racing’s Jacob Abel came in seventh with a 1m10.543s in the No. 51 Honda, while Juncos Hollinger’s Sting Ray Robb finished with a time of 1m10.595s in the No. 77 Chevy.

David Malukas reflected on the day’s performance, expressing a mix of satisfaction and opportunity for improvement. “For the majority of the day, we were right up there, honestly very quick,” Malukas said. “But during the last new tire run, we didn’t manage it properly. We were experimenting with different hybrid maps and ended up on the wrong one, which caused rear-tire locking.”

Coming off a challenging race at The Thermal Club, where performance was lackluster, Malukas was relieved to find speed and potential at Indianapolis. “Today was a significant turnaround,” he added. “It was crucial to bounce back after the slow performance at Thermal, which was partly due to my driving. Today, we definitely did a 180.”

As teams and drivers continue to fine-tune their strategies and setups, the anticipation for the next race in the series only intensifies. The Indianapolis test session not only provided a thrilling spectacle but also set the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating continuation of the IndyCar season.
