In a dramatic twist, Ralf Schumacher, F1 veteran, has speculated that rookie driver Isack Hadjar’s emotional reaction following his Australian Grand Prix crash might be linked to the intense scrutiny of Red Bull’s motor advisor, Dr. Helmut Marko. Hadjar, who was the first rookie to crash in a Grand Prix this season, was visibly upset following the incident, an emotion exasperated by Marko’s dismissive comments.
At the outset of the 2025 F1 season, Hadjar, a fresh face on the Racing Bulls team, spun out of control during the formation lap in Australia. Tragically, his race ended before it officially began, as Hadjar’s VCARB02 hit the barrier, leaving the rookie driver in tears. As he journeyed back to the paddock, Anthony Hamilton, father of Lewis Hamilton, offered consolation to the disheartened young racer.
Inside the Racing Bulls’ quarters, Peter Bayer, the team’s head, extended words of empathy towards Hadjar. Even Stefano Domenicali, Formula 1’s chief, offered his support. However, Hadjar’s display of emotion didn’t seem to resonate with Marko. The Red Bull advisor described the incident as an “embarrassing, tearful show” to ORF, adding a layer of criticism to the rookie’s already sorrowful day.
Even though Hadjar confessed that he felt “embarrassed” by the incident, Schumacher opined that the fear of Marko’s notoriously stern demeanor might have heightened the younger driver’s reaction. “The first race, a remarkable performance until the unfortunate event, and then to let the team down in such a way is genuinely sad,” said Schumacher, highlighting the pressure Hadjar must have felt.
However, Schumacher clarified that Marko’s comment about the tears being “embarrassing” was possibly not intended to be taken literally. Instead, he reasoned that it was more in tune with Marko’s outspoken character.
For Hadjar, the Australian Grand Prix ended in disappointment as he was one among the four rookies, including Jack Doohan, Gabriel Bortoleto, and his teammate Liam Lawson, who couldn’t complete the race at the rain-soaked Albert Park circuit.
Expressing regret over his error, Hadjar said, “Overdid it, overslipped the rears and once I lost the car, tried to save it, but was just a passenger. I didn’t expect to lose control so quickly. I’m just mad.” He lamented on missing out on the experience, his first grand prix, and the opportunity to race on a wet track.
Despite the setback, Hadjar remained resilient, reflecting on his challenging journey to F1. He admitted, “I would say I’ve had similar low moments like this, this one is tough. But my way to F1 was also quite brutal, and I would say I have a strong chin, but this one definitely hits pretty hard.” The incident serves as a stark reminder of the high pressure and intense scrutiny that rookie drivers face in the world of Formula 1 racing.
