Ralf Schumacher, a six-time Formula 1 race winner and current commentator, has voiced his disagreement with a comment made by Sebastian Vettel, the four-time World Champion. Vettel’s statement, suggesting that motorsport remains a domain where “old white men celebrate a petrol party,” was branded as “very narrow-minded” by Schumacher.

Schumacher, who is one of only three openly LGBTQ+ Formula 1 drivers, along with Lella Lombardi and Mike Beuttler, made history last year by publicly announcing his relationship with another man through Instagram. Vettel, who bid farewell to his illustrious Formula 1 career by the end of 2022, expressed his admiration for Schumacher’s courageous step.

In an interview with the Swiss daily Tagesanzeiger, Vettel lauded Schumacher and other role models who have the bravery to come out. “I’m not sure if I could openly discuss it myself, and that’s why we should value those who do,” Vettel stated.

Vettel’s views on the global motorsport community’s reaction to Schumacher’s revelation were also shared during the interview. He believed the response was largely positive, but also acknowledged that motorsport, in some aspects, remains a traditionalist arena where certain topics are considered taboo.

He further credited Lewis Hamilton, the premier black Formula 1 driver, for breaking down numerous barriers and bringing vital discussions on racism to the fore. Recalling the early days of his career, which coincided with Hamilton’s, Vettel noted the unjust criticism directed at Hamilton due to his race. He acknowledged Hamilton’s pivotal role in proving these critics wrong, attributing it not only to his formidable performance but also to the necessity of figures like him in the sport.

“The sport is fiercely competitive, with everyone striving to win. However, the fight should be fair. That’s my belief—it’s all about fairness and treating everyone equally, irrespective of who they love or who they are,” Vettel elaborated.

While Schumacher appreciated most of Vettel’s comments, he took issue with the “old white men” remark. In a social media response, Schumacher expressed his disagreement with Vettel’s view and labeled it as “completely wrong” and “narrow-minded.” He asserted that his coming out experience was supported by the entire F1 community, contradicting Vettel’s assertion.

Towards the end of his career, Vettel teamed up with Hamilton to leverage their influence and address issues they deemed critical, with Vettel frequently highlighting environmental concerns and projects.
