Schumacher wonders why Alonso still races in Formula 1.

Schumacher duvida por que Alonso ainda corre na Fórmula 1.

Former Formula 1 race winner Ralf Schumacher has raised doubts about Fernando Alonso’s continued involvement in the sport, suggesting that teams are now hesitant to give opportunities to young drivers. Since his comeback in 2021, Alonso has consistently performed well and achieved the second highest number of podium finishes last season. The 42-year-old Spaniard recently revealed that he had his best winter training results and hinted that he could continue racing in Formula 1 until he is 50. In contrast, another prominent figure in the sport, Lewis Hamilton, will continue his F1 career into his 40s after signing a multi-year contract with Ferrari last month. This season marks the first time the grid has remained unchanged at the start of an F1 season, with the Formula 2 champion missing out on a promotion for the third time in five years. Schumacher believes that the lack of testing during the season is hindering the progression of young talents and has called for changes to be implemented to break this harmful cycle. “And Alonso, now 42 years old, is still driving. Nothing against Alonso – but shouldn’t the goal of Formula 1 be to have a younger grid?” expressed Schumacher to Speedweek.

Daniel Ricciardo suffered a wrist injury in a training accident at Zandvoort last year, which interrupted his return to Formula 1 and gave Liam Lawson the opportunity to make his debut in the sport. The young driver from New Zealand impressed in his five races, achieving a ninth place in Singapore. However, he has now returned to the reserve bench as Red Bull Racing has decided to maintain their current lineup of drivers.

Similarly, Carlos Sainz was diagnosed with appendicitis during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, leading Oliver Bearman to be thrust into the spotlight as his substitute at Ferrari. Despite having only one practice session, the 18-year-old British youngster performed exceptionally well under pressure, finishing ahead of his compatriots Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris in his first Formula 1 appearance.

Schumacher, a former Formula 1 driver, emphasized the importance of new drivers having the opportunity to succeed and hopes that Bearman’s performance will encourage teams to consider bringing in fresh talent. Bearman has since resumed his extensive testing program with Ferrari, including driving the 2022 car, the F1-75, at the Fiorano test track. He is also scheduled to participate in six FP1 sessions with the Haas team. However, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur advised against drawing conclusions about Bearman’s future in Formula 1 at this early stage.

Vasseur believes it is best to take it slow and allow Bearman to gain more experience and opportunities throughout the season. Bearman and Ferrari’s main focus remains on this year’s Formula 2 championship, as he faces a significant challenge in that series. Vasseur acknowledges that he made a mistake by preventing Bearman from participating in a Formula 2 race weekend and wants to ensure that the young driver’s development receives the attention it deserves.
