The Formula 1 paddock is buzzing with seismic shifts at Sauber, as the future-Audi powerhouse positions itself for a dramatic overhaul ahead of the 2025 season. The team has pulled off a coup by accelerating the arrival of Jonathan Wheatley, former Red Bull sporting director, setting the stage for his reign to begin sooner than expected. Originally slated for a mid-summer debut, Wheatley is now set to take the reins in time for the third round of the season in Japan on April 6.

But this bold move comes with a bittersweet twist. Alessandro Alunni Bravi, the team’s charismatic public face, is set to exit the Hinwil operation at the end of January, leaving behind an indelible legacy after seven transformative years.

Wheatley’s Fast-Tracked Arrival

Wheatley’s move, first announced last year, signals Sauber’s intent to bolster its leadership as it transitions into a full-fledged Audi works outfit by 2026. The decision to fast-track his start date reflects the urgency of the team’s ambitions to revamp its race-day operations and strategy. Wheatley’s reputation as a tactical mastermind during Red Bull’s dominance makes him the perfect figure to guide Sauber through this critical evolution.

Bravi’s Emotional Farewell

Bravi, who joined Sauber in 2017 as general counsel and board member before rising to managing director in 2022, has been a cornerstone of the team’s growth. As team representative, he became the face of Sauber during its tumultuous yet inspiring journey toward the Audi era. His departure, while expected, marks the end of an era for the team.

In a heartfelt statement, Bravi reflected on his tenure:

“This organisation went through exciting and difficult times alike, all without ever losing its spirit and its commitment… I was proud of being able to represent the team as its public face in the last two years.”

Audi’s Tribute to Bravi

Mattia Binotto, Audi’s COO and CTO, praised Bravi’s contributions, stating:

“He came to embody the essence of Sauber throughout the years.”

With Bravi moving on to new challenges and Wheatley poised to inject fresh energy into the squad, Sauber’s strategic shake-up is a clear signal to the Formula 1 world that the team is ready to compete at the highest level as it inches closer to its Audi future. The stage is set, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
