In a shocking turn of events, the FIA, Formula 1’s governing body, has bid farewell to another high-ranking official in a recent wave of top-level departures. Sara Mariani, the Director of Sustainability, Diversity, and Inclusion (D&I), has been ousted from her position amidst a significant restructuring within the organization.
Mariani, who has been at the helm of the D&I department for the past 18 months, expressed her sentiments in an out-of-office email, lamenting the abrupt end to her tenure. She emphasized the importance of recognizing talent and dedication, particularly for women in leadership roles, hinting at potential underlying issues within the FIA.
Following structural changes announced by the FIA, Mariani’s role was deemed redundant, leading to her imminent departure. The organization disclosed that the Sustainability and D&I function will now be divided into two separate divisions, with new leadership taking the reins.
The FIA conveyed its gratitude towards Mariani for her contributions and leadership, ensuring a smooth transition as she exits the organization in June 2025. The sustainability portfolio will now be overseen by Willem Groenewald, while Diversity and Inclusion will fall under the purview of Alessandra Malhame, the senior human resources director.
Mariani’s exit adds to a string of high-profile resignations within the FIA, including Robert Reid, Paolo Basarri, Bertrand Badre, Tom Purves, and Natalie Robyn. Notable departures from the race stewarding team, such as Niels Wittich, Tim Mayer, and Janette Tan, have also taken place, underscoring a period of significant upheaval within the organization.
The FIA’s decision to overhaul its leadership structure raises questions about the future direction of the governing body and its commitment to sustainability, diversity, and inclusion in the high-octane world of Formula 1. As the dust settles on Mariani’s departure, the motorsport community awaits further developments in this unfolding saga of change and transformation.
