In a dramatic turn of events at the Charlotte Xfinity race, Sammy Smith’s fifth-place finish has been wiped out due to disqualification, shaking up the final standings and awarding unexpected victories to other drivers.

The race, which saw William Byron clinch the win for Hendrick Motorsports by overtaking Justin Allgaier, took a surprising twist during post-race inspection. While Byron’s No. 17 Chevrolet passed without issue, Smith’s No. 8 JR Motorsports Chevrolet failed to meet the minimum weight requirement, leading to his disqualification. Instead of celebrating a top-five finish, Smith was relegated to 38th place in the final running order.

This turn of events not only propelled Dean Thompson to his first top-five finish in the NASCAR Xfinity Series but also boosted Josh Williams to sixth place, matching his career-best result. Austin Hill, Ryan Ellis, Christian Eckes, and Sheldon Creed also saw improvements in their positions due to Smith’s disqualification.

The repercussions for Smith extended beyond just the race results, as he plummeted from eighth to 13th in the regular season standings following the disqualification. Meanwhile, other cars, including the No. 48 Big Machine Racing Chevrolet, the No. 26 Sam Hunt Racing Toyota, and the No. 39 RSS Racing Chevrolet, were subjected to further inspection at the R&D Center.

Furthermore, NASCAR’s scrutiny revealed that the No. 00 Haas Factory Team Ford had one loose lug nut, adding to the post-race drama. Notably, statistical analysis by Seth Eggert highlighted that this season has seen a record number of eight disqualifications across the three national divisions, underscoring the heightened intensity and scrutiny in NASCAR competitions.
