Carlos Sainz reacts to backlash about delayed decision on new F1 team

Carlos Sainz is facing criticism for taking too much time to make a decision about his future in Formula 1. He argues that this decision is crucial as it will shape the next phase of his career. Ever since it was announced that Lewis Hamilton will replace him at Ferrari in 2025, speculation about Sainz’s next move has been making headlines off the track. Despite rumors of him joining Red Bull being dispelled and Mercedes likely promoting Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Sainz was considering options with Sauber/Audi and Williams until Alpine entered the picture during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend. While Sainz initially claimed that a resolution was near in Barcelona, he later backtracked on that statement in Austria due to Alpine’s renewed proposal.

The process of weighing his future team options has become a significant distraction for Sainz, consuming a lot of his time and energy. This situation prevents him from fully disconnecting and recharging, as his mind is constantly preoccupied with thoughts about his future. However, Sainz believes that despite the speculation, his recent performance at the Red Bull Ring demonstrates that it is not affecting his results. He feels confident and able to perform at his best once he puts on his helmet and gets in the car. Sainz acknowledges that being in a stable contract situation would likely provide even better performance, but he stands by his decision to prioritize his career aspirations.

Multiple drivers without confirmed plans have stated that Sainz is causing delays in the driver market, and Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu is confused by his indecisiveness. However, Sainz remains firm in his belief that he has the right to take his time in making a decision that will have long-term implications. He acknowledges that there is an element of speculation and luck involved in understanding the current state of Formula 1. Sainz emphasizes the importance of not judging his move based solely on short-term or immediate results, but rather considering the impact it will have on his career in the next five years and beyond. Given the significance of this decision and its potential effects on his future, Sainz believes it is valid to give himself ample time to make the right choice.
