Carlos Sainz is set to depart from Ferrari after the conclusion of the 2024 season. The Formula 1 driver had been engaged in discussions with the team regarding an extension to his contract. However, these negotiations took a different direction when it was announced that Lewis Hamilton would be joining Ferrari in 2025. Sainz expressed his surprise at this turn of events, as he had been optimistic about continuing his journey with Ferrari. Nonetheless, with Hamilton’s arrival, Sainz now finds himself without a seat for the following season. Despite being linked to the Sauber-owned team, which is set to become an Audi works entry in 2026, Sainz is taking his time to thoroughly consider all available options before making a decision about his future in the sport.
He stated: “I suppose that all drivers whose contracts are expiring are pondering their choices, engaging in discussions with various teams, observing the progress and status of other structures and teams, and then making a decision later in the year.
“But for now, I believe that winter testing is of utmost importance. It is a three-day event, the only opportunity we have for testing.
“So if you divert your attention elsewhere, you are essentially wasting time, right? There will be plenty of time to sit down and make a decision.
Sainz has clarified that he has received confirmation that the team fully supports him as he prepares to conclude his fourth and final season with Ferrari before departing.
“To be honest, on the emotional side, not much has sunk in yet. We have 24 races ahead of us, and I anticipate that the last few races, or even the final race, will be emotional. This is particularly because I will be leaving behind an exceptional group of individuals with whom I have worked incredibly well,” expressed Sainz.
“I have encountered some remarkable individuals at Ferrari, and I have also encountered numerous passionate fans around the world who have made me feel like I belong right from the start. Therefore, we will save the emotional aspect for the end of the year. Until then, it is crucial to remain focused and strive to deliver the best possible performance for this team in my final year.
“I have been assured by Fred [Vasseur, Ferrari Team Principal] and the team that they will provide me with unwavering support. If we find ourselves in a championship battle this year, we will push ourselves to the limit to achieve it together and have a memorable final year together. The future is long.
“I am hopeful that I have many years ahead in my career. So let’s wait and see where the future takes me.”
