Sainz: Choosing the next Formula 1 team under new regulations is like flipping a coin.

Sainz: Escolher próxima equipe de Fórmula 1 sob novas regulamentações ‘como jogar uma moeda ao ar’

Carlos Sainz Jr of Ferrari recently discussed his future in Formula 1, emphasizing that he cannot guarantee success with his next team due to the unpredictable nature of the sport. Sainz is currently looking for a spot on the grid for the 2025 season after Ferrari’s decision to hire Lewis Hamilton. Despite being a highly sought-after driver, Sainz’s options may have been limited by Aston Martin’s recent announcement that Fernando Alonso will continue with the team. Rumors suggest that Sainz could potentially join Mercedes or the Audi-backed Sauber team. When asked about the possibility of joining a team with uncertain success, Sainz remained optimistic, stating that he still has good options available. However, there have been no significant developments in recent weeks, and Sainz understands that the decision-making process takes time. He hopes that a resolution will be reached soon, as this would allow him to focus solely on his performance this year.

Despite discussing in Japan that negotiations to finalize his next move would accelerate, Sainz acknowledged that he will have to “consider all possibilities.”

A significant factor that will determine the choice of the former McLaren driver is the regulatory overhaul planned for 2026, which will bring modifications to engine and aerodynamic regulations.

Amid speculation that the revamped formula may prioritize the engine, Alonso explained that Aston Martin’s collaboration with Honda played a significant role in his decision to renew.

However, Sainz maintains that making decisions based on a fresh start is “like tossing a coin in the air,” as “it is currently impossible to know who will succeed in 2026.”

“So, even when I make the decision about my whereabouts in 2026/2027 – no matter how much I communicate with the teams, no matter how much they convince me of the performance of their engines – the truth is that nobody knows,” he continued.

“If someone emerges victorious in 2026, in my opinion, it will not be due to a smart decision-making, but rather being in the right place at the right time.

“As for 2025, undoubtedly, considering the level I am currently demonstrating and my driving skills, being in a competitive car would be highly attractive to me.

“But, once again, it does not depend on me and I must be patient.”
