George Russell, Mercedes AMG F1 driver, expressed that the team has identified the reasons behind the drop in performance in the first two races of the 2024 Formula 1 season. Despite positive results in practice, Russell and his teammate Lewis Hamilton have struggled to secure significant points. Toto Wolff, Mercedes team boss, acknowledged that the team’s performance in Jeddah did not meet expectations. However, Russell believes that the success of their rivals may not accurately reflect Mercedes’ capabilities. He remains confident that the team has potential and believes that, with more time and training, they will be able to maximize their performance and compete with other top teams.
Despite the challenges faced with the current ground effect cars, Mercedes has secured podiums in the last two seasons in Australia. Russell, the British driver, even led the race last year. He holds hope that Mercedes can compete for a podium finish this weekend, as the team plans to use the practice sessions to address their issues.
“We’ve had good performances here in the last two seasons,” acknowledged Russell. “Last year, we qualified second and third, and were in the mix for the win at one point. We’ve gained valuable knowledge in the first two races.”
“We are determined to test various aspects of the car tomorrow, in order to better understand how to maximize its performance. It seems like this year’s tire compound is different, and Ferrari tends to shine in qualifying with the C5 tire.”
Russell also highlighted the unpredictable results of Aston Martin last season, emphasizing the importance of not judging Mercedes solely based on their current form, but rather on their final result.
“However, if you take Red Bull out of the equation, there is an exciting battle right behind them,” he continued. “But our goal is not to fight for second place; we want to compete for the win. We know it’s a tough task, but fortunes can change quickly in this sport.”
“During our meetings this morning, we saw Aston Martin on the podium. If someone had predicted that after the first six races of last year, when they finished fifth in the championship, it would be hard to believe. This shows how things can change quickly.”
