Russell derrota Verstappen em empate pela pole position do Grande Prêmio do Canadá de Fórmula 1.

In preparation for the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, George Russell secured pole position in an impressive display, matching Max Verstappen’s lap time. However, Sergio Perez’s hopes were dashed as he failed to make it past Q1, along with both Ferraris in Q2.

During Q1, the track was briefly showered by light rain, adding to the challenge posed by the strong winds at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. As the grid took shape, the battle for pole position remained open, following impressive performances by Lando Norris in FP1, Fernando Alonso in FP2, and Lewis Hamilton in FP3.

To everyone’s surprise, Sergio Perez failed to deliver a competitive flying lap in Q1. Despite recently signing a contract extension, the Red Bull driver found himself eliminated in 16th position, alongside the Haas drivers, both Alpines, and Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg. In contrast, Perez’s teammate, Max Verstappen, set the fastest time in Q1.

The threat of rain briefly loomed in Q2, but the session remained mostly dry. Unfortunately for Ferrari, neither of their drivers could keep up with the pace, resulting in Charles Leclerc’s elimination in 11th position, followed by his teammate Carlos Sainz. George Russell led the session, with Lewis Hamilton close behind.

As Q3 approached, dark clouds gathered in the sky, but the drivers went out on track with used soft tires, taking advantage of the dry conditions. The Mercedes drivers initially led after their first attempts. However, no one could surpass Russell’s impressive pole time. Verstappen managed to match Russell’s time with a final lap of 1m12.000s, securing the second position on the grid.

McLaren adopted a strategy of two flying laps for their drivers, separated by cooling and warming laps, in order to optimize tire heating and track position. Lando Norris secured third place on the grid, followed by Oscar Piastri.

Daniel Ricciardo from Red Bull achieved the fifth fastest time overall, ahead of FP3 leader Fernando Alonso. Yuki Tsunoda, who will continue with Red Bull in 2025, secured seventh place, while Hamilton finished eighth, despite his impressive performance in Q2. Home driver Lance Stroll showed renewed pace for Aston Martin, qualifying ninth overall.

Alex Albon encountered a setback with a cross-threaded wheel nut in Q2. However, he managed to get out late in the session and secured the sixth fastest time. He ended up completing the top 10.

Williams’ Logan Sargeant showed promising signs of pace in Q2, but fell behind the Ferraris, finishing in 13th place. However, it was his best qualifying performance of the season so far. He outperformed Haas’ Kevin Magnussen and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly in the second segment of qualifying.

Valtteri Bottas suffered his third consecutive elimination in Q1, finishing in 17th place. Meanwhile, Esteban Ocon, who received a five-place grid penalty in Monaco, will start at the back of the pack for Alpine, despite finishing 18th in Q1. As a result, Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu will move up to 19th place, with Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg securing 18th place.
