Russell acredita que a Mercedes tem a fórmula para futuras vitórias na F1.

Russell is confident that Mercedes will recover and return to winning in this season or the next. He believes that Mercedes has a clear understanding of how to make significant improvements with their updates, which will allow them to achieve victories in the 2024 Formula 1 season.

In the recent races, Mercedes has finally managed to understand the current ground effect regulations. As a result, they have emerged as a strong contender at the front of the grid, thanks to their continuous updates. Russell took advantage of Mercedes’ improved performance and secured pole position, as well as a podium finish in Canada. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton led a third and fourth place finish for Mercedes in Spain the previous weekend.

However, Hamilton still finished behind McLaren’s Lando Norris, who came in second place, by a 15-second margin. Norris was still two seconds behind the race winner, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. While Mercedes boss Toto Wolff argued that the gap to the top two was not a true reflection of their performance, Hamilton acknowledged the need for more updates to close the distance.

Hamilton hinted that there are more developments in progress, and Russell firmly believes that Mercedes is fully aware of the areas that need improvement. When asked if the Spanish Grand Prix confirmed the legitimacy of Mercedes’ pace in Montreal, Russell responded with certainty, saying: “Yes, absolutely. We finished maybe 20 seconds behind the winner, which is still a significant difference in the grand scheme of things. However, we know we had the fastest car last week. It is unrealistic to expect to have the fastest car every weekend, but we feel that momentum is on our side. We are confident that we know what steps to take with our updates to make the next important leap.”

Russell believes that Mercedes’ unique position in the standings compared to its main rivals will give them an advantage when the time restrictions for aerodynamic testing are changed. The British driver expressed his confidence in the ability of the eight-time F1 champions to make significant progress and is looking forward to the opportunity to compete for wins before the rule changes in 2026.

“I think even now, we are ranked fourth in the Constructors’ Championship,” he acknowledged. “We have more wind tunnel resources than all of our competitors, and we have a clear understanding of what needs to be done to make big strides now. So, we are all excited about the rest of the season. I am confident that we will win races this year and next year.”

Russell also noted that the team’s recent performance has been promising, with two leads in the last two weeks since the implementation of the updates. “Who knows what can happen. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but the pace we showed last week and this week was unexpected at the beginning of the season.”

While Norris was disappointed with the missed opportunity to win in the “fastest car” due to a setback at the start, Russell is convinced that Red Bull still has the advantage. “I mean, I think he has the fastest car, and if you look at his pace, it was very controlled in the first sector,” Russell commented on Verstappen and Red Bull. “He was probably managing six tenths of a second per lap in the high-speed corners, and when you have that advantage, you can afford to take better care of the tires. Lando got close to him, but Max accelerated when needed. Max is one of the greatest drivers of all time, and the synergy between him and the team is reminiscent of the Mercedes era with Lewis. Everything is falling into place, and we just need to keep applying pressure.”
