Mercedes displays impressive speed during qualifying session, using their updated W15 to secure pole position for Russell. In a tight battle with Max Verstappen, Russell managed to clock an identical time in Q3 before the Dutchman. However, during the race, Russell struggled to maintain his lead. Although he initially defended against Verstappen, he eventually yielded to Lando Norris and made a crucial mistake, allowing both Norris and Verstappen to overtake him. A subsequent clash with Oscar Piastri resulted in Russell losing a position to his teammate Lewis Hamilton, although he managed to regain it and finish in third place.

Expressing his disappointment in Mercedes’ post-race report, Russell admitted to making several mistakes that hindered his chances of victory. Nevertheless, he found solace in the fact that being disappointed with a podium finish shows the progress they have made. Russell emphasized the team’s consistent improvement and their status as one of the fastest cars on the track during the weekend. He acknowledged the challenging conditions and the consequences of his errors, which allowed other drivers to pass him. However, Russell praised the team’s pace, their ability to react, and expressed his anticipation for the next race in Barcelona.

Hamilton, on the other hand, faced a challenging weekend. Despite showing promise in practice sessions, he only qualified in seventh place. However, he managed to climb to fourth place by the end of the race, earning valuable points for the team. Hamilton acknowledged the team’s progress and expressed gratitude to the hardworking people in Brackley and Brixworth who contributed to his recent upgrades. Although disappointed with his own performance and the mistakes he made, Hamilton remained optimistic about the car’s performance and promised to come back stronger in the upcoming races.

The team principal of Mercedes, Toto Wolff, celebrated the team’s first podium of the 2024 season. He praised the diligent work happening behind the scenes in Brackley and Brixworth, recognizing the efforts that led to the recent success.

“It was a promising weekend,” Wolff stated. “We have been making progress recently and introducing upgrades that are performing well. In terms of performance, it seems like we are improving with each Grand Prix.

“The hard work of everyone in Brackley and Brixworth is paying off as we secured our first podium of the year. It is rewarding to see that their dedication is being rewarded. We hope to maintain this positive momentum.

“As we look ahead to Barcelona, it is a track that really challenges a car. We are eager to go there and get a clear understanding of our performance level,” he emphasized.

“Today’s race presented its challenges,” Wolff admitted. “Finishing in third and fourth place, considering our recent results, is undeniably positive.

“However, I must acknowledge that both drivers are aware that we could have achieved more. We certainly had the potential to secure one or two additional positions and maybe even fight for the win.

“Therefore, there is a touch of disappointment, but ultimately, if you had told us before the weekend that we would finish in third and fourth place, we would have gladly accepted it,” he concluded.
