The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (ADAARL) continues to make headlines in the world of racing. Recently, Zak Brown of McLaren addressed rumors about the hiring of Josef Newgarden, emphasizing his admiration for the talented driver but stating that McLaren is satisfied with its current team of 62 drivers. Newgarden, having signed a contract extension with Team Penske, is now off the market. This brings the focus back to McLaren and the future of its driver lineup. McLaren has been the most active team in the driver market this year, especially due to the injuries suffered by David Malukas. As a result, McLaren had to find replacements for Malukas, leading to Brown’s lighthearted comment about having “42 drivers.” With Malukas out of the team, Callum Ilott and Theo Pourchaire have taken turns to replace him. However, McLaren’s lineup remains uncertain, as only Pato O’Ward is definitely signed beyond 2024. The team now faces the task of determining who will occupy the remaining seats alongside O’Ward. Brown acknowledged the unexpected nature of recent events and expressed the need for McLaren to carefully consider its options. While there is a shortlist of potential candidates, current drivers are at the top of the list. Rossi, in particular, has been a consistent performer for McLaren this season, showcasing his skills and experience. Despite some setbacks, including qualifying performance, Rossi has consistently finished in the top 10. His winning experience at the Indy 500 and reputation as a reliable driver make him a strong candidate to retain his place. On the other hand, Pourchaire is still relatively new to the IndyCar scene. However, he has shown promise with impressive performances in his limited races. His ability to adapt and learn quickly will play a crucial role in securing a permanent place at McLaren. Ilott, who has competed in the World Endurance Championship, has had few opportunities to impress McLaren. Although his previous results with Juncos have been impressive, Ilott’s chances of securing a place at McLaren may be hindered by the team’s preference for experienced drivers. Malukas’s future remains uncertain due to his injury. Although he has been working with the IndyCar content creation team during his recovery, it is unclear when he will be ready to race again. McLaren has not ruled out a future reunion with Malukas, but the team is likely to make its driver decisions before his return. Lundgaard, who has been a prominent name in the season’s rumor mill, may also be considered by McLaren. However, the lack of better options and possible improvements within his current team, Rahal, may influence Lundgaard to stay where he is. The upcoming season will shed more light on McLaren’s driver lineup and those of other teams. While there are still many uncertainties, the pieces are slowly falling into place, and the IndyCar grid of 2025 will soon take shape.
