Ross Chastain’s Unapologetic Silence Sparks Controversy in NASCAR Community After COTA Incident

Busch Light Chevrolet driver Ross Chastain (1) leads a group of cars throught turn 16 during the NASCAR Cup Series EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas on Sunday, March 2, 2025 in Austin.

In a recent turn of events, Ross Chastain, NASCAR’s renowned provocateur, has left the racing community in suspense after his controversial actions at the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix race. The event was characterized by a range of thrilling moments, from the nail-biting clean pass made by the eventual winner in the final lap, to the near-miss of another racer who came within inches of victory. However, it was the wrecks that garnered the most attention, beginning from the initial lap itself, with Chase Elliott at their heart.

Chastain’s aggressive maneuver into the first corner resulted in a collision with Elliott’s car, leading to a toe link issue for the latter. The incident not only disrupted Elliott’s race but also cast a harsh spotlight on Chastain. While Elliott managed to bounce back from the setback, his initial qualifying effort of third place was undone by the incident, as he dropped back to 37th.

The repairs required multiple pit stops throughout the race, causing Elliott to remain outside the top 25 for the majority of the first and second stages. It was only when a final caution flag led to fresher tires that Elliott managed to regain his stride, surging from 23rd to 4th in the last 13 laps, reminiscent of his Charlotte Roval victory in 2019.

However, Chastain’s silence in the aftermath has raised eyebrows in the NASCAR community. Despite a heated statement from Elliott, Chastain has yet to respond. This silent treatment has not gone unnoticed, particularly by the hosts of the ‘Door, Bumper, Clear’ show. Karsyn Elledge, in particular, noted Chastain’s hypocrisy, considering he was quick to criticize Carson Hocevar’s aggressive driving in the previous week’s race.

Freddie Kraft, the spotter for No. 23, also expressed his dissatisfaction with Chastain’s actions and silence. Veteran crew chief Tommy Baldwin joined the chorus of critics, humorously suggesting that Chastain’s pre-race hat may have been too tight.

In contrast, Connor Zilisch, a young prodigy who recently clinched the Xfinity Cup Series race at COTA, took a more humble approach. Despite starting from the 32nd spot due to a penalty, Zilisch managed to fight his way to the front, albeit causing a few collisions along the way. Unlike Chastain, Zilisch acknowledged his errors and apologized, demonstrating the importance of team spirit and responsibility.

Chastain, known for his aggressive driving, had previously pushed AJ Allmendinger and Alex Bowman aside to secure his first Cup Series victory at the 2022 COTA race. However, his silent treatment following the recent controversy has left the racing community awaiting his response. As the anticipation builds, one can only wonder what the Trackhouse Racing driver will have to say for himself.
