Rosberg Warns: Hamilton’s Qualifying Struggles Could Spell Trouble at Ferrari

Nico Rosberg has issued a stark warning to his former teammate Lewis Hamilton as the seven-time World Champion prepares for his high-profile move to Ferrari in 2025. According to Rosberg, Hamilton’s recent qualifying woes could weigh heavily on his shoulders and lead to a challenging stint with the Scuderia.

Hamilton, who was comprehensively outqualified by his Mercedes teammate George Russell during the 2024 season, has struggled to maintain the one-lap pace that once defined his dominance in Formula 1. With an average qualifying position of 8.54—only seventh-best on the grid—Hamilton faced four Q1 exits and two Q2 eliminations throughout the year.

“A Painful Adventure Awaits”

Speaking on the Sky F1 podcast, Rosberg didn’t mince words:

“Lewis is at a place where he’s saying to himself, ‘I’m not fast anymore,’ and that’s really singled out to qualifying. If he doesn’t resolve this, his move to Ferrari could turn into a painful adventure.”

Rosberg noted that while Hamilton’s race-day performances remain exemplary—highlighted by two stunning wins at Silverstone and Spa in 2024—his Saturday form is cause for concern.

“His race pace is still insanely strong. But in Formula 1, if you don’t qualify high up, it becomes an uphill battle. And when your teammate is consistently beating you, especially one who isn’t a World Champion, it’s mentally tough, particularly for someone like Lewis, who’s regarded as the GOAT.”

“Ferrari’s Expectations Are Sky-High”

Hamilton’s move to Ferrari comes at a pivotal moment for the team. The Scuderia narrowly lost the Constructors’ Championship to McLaren in 2024, with Charles Leclerc securing three wins and finishing second in the Drivers’ Standings behind Lando Norris. With Hamilton replacing Carlos Sainz, Ferrari expects him to perform at Leclerc’s level and lead the charge for their first title since 2007.

However, Rosberg expressed concern about Hamilton’s ability to adapt to Ferrari’s ecosystem and match Leclerc, who has been the team’s linchpin since 2019.

“Leclerc knows the team inside out, and he’s in his prime. For Lewis, coming in as the new driver and struggling with qualifying could be a real problem. Ferrari hired him to fight for World Championships, not to be a second fiddle.”

“A Chance for Redemption”

Despite his criticisms, Rosberg remains hopeful that Hamilton can turn things around with a fresh start at Ferrari.

“This is a reset for him. A new team, new surroundings—it might be exactly what Lewis needs to find his old self again. Ferrari will give him a car capable of fighting at the front, but it’s up to Lewis to bring back the magic we’ve seen in the past.”

“The Stakes Are Higher Than Ever”

Hamilton’s move to Ferrari marks a critical juncture in his illustrious career. While his legacy as one of the sport’s greatest drivers is secure, his ability to bounce back from his qualifying struggles will define his time at the Maranello-based outfit.

With Leclerc already entrenched as Ferrari’s leader, Hamilton will need to prove he still has what it takes to battle at the front, especially in a team that expects nothing less than excellence.
