The rookie free practice session of the Formula E took place this Friday in Misano, with Taylor Barnard being the fastest. This is already a tradition in the electric single-seater championship, putting drivers with no competitive experience in the category on track.
Drivers from different disciplines participated, including from Formula 2. Barnard (NEOM McLaren/Nissan) finished with the best time, clocking in at 1m18.762s. He surpassed Robert Shwartzman (DS Penske) by 0.154s, followed by Zane Maloney (Andretti/Porsche). The Barbados driver, who leads the F2, was 0.584s off the pace.
The top five was completed by Tim Tramnitz (Abt Cupra/Mahindra) and Matt Campbell (TAG Heuer Porsche), the latter already over a second behind Barnard. Other drivers who participated include Mikel Azcona (ERT Formula E), Paul Aron (Envision Racing/Jaguar), Yann Ehrlacher (Maserati), and Sheldon van der Linde (Jaguar TCS Racing).
This was also the absolute debut of Formula E in Misano, which follows Rome as the location of the Italian round and is the second permanent circuit in history after the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez (Mexico). Puebla in Mexico and the Circuito Ricardo Tormo in Spain also featured on the calendar, but were contingency solutions due to the pandemic. Later this year, the Shanghai ePrix will be held at the permanent circuit in that city.
