Rookie Gabriel Bortoleto Defies Critics, Makes Impressive Debut at Australian Grand Prix

Rookie driver Gabriel Bortoleto shakes up the Formula 1 scene during his debut performance at the 2025 Australian Grand Prix, challenging Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko’s dismissive remarks about his driving prowess. The young Brazilian driver didn’t just make it into Q2 on his maiden qualifying session, but he also outpaced veteran teammate Nico Hulkenberg.

The burgeoning talent, who won the Formula 2 championship, is among the five newcomers to the racing circuit this year. He has secured a seat with Sauber, a Swiss team set for evolution into Audi after this season. Bortoleto’s performance on the track stood out as he surpassed Red Bull’s Liam Lawson and the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli, which had suffered damage earlier.

The lead-up to the Grand Prix saw Marko, a key figure at Red Bull, downplay Bortoleto’s skills, dubbing him a mere ‘B’ driver in a ServusTV interview. However, Bortoleto seemed unperturbed by this assessment, stating his intention to prove Marko wrong over time. His performance in Albert Park has already begun to challenge Marko’s viewpoint.

Bortoleto’s response to Marko’s comments was full of determination and resilience. He asserted that opinions, however harsh, would not deter him from his path. He also humorously suggested that Marko should check the live timings.

Starting in the midfield, not too far behind his mentor and manager, Fernando Alonso, Bortoleto cheekily joked about ‘divebombing’ the Spaniard, but quickly dismissed it as a jest. He emphasized mutual respect and fair play on the track, promising a good time together.

As the Australian Grand Prix anticipates a wet race day, Bortoleto is relishing the prospect. Despite the added challenges that a wet track brings, he expressed his affinity for rain-soaked races. He admitted that while he hasn’t had many opportunities to race in such conditions recently, he thoroughly enjoys them and looks forward to demonstrating his capability.

Looking forward to the race, Bortoleto showed a pragmatic approach, realizing that he can’t control the weather but can control how he responds to it. He saw this as an opportunity to gain valuable experience early in his career, learning from any mistakes he might make.

Bortoleto’s bid to improve his Q2 performance didn’t go exactly as planned. An overambitious move on Turn 4 led to him losing control over the kerbs. Despite the hiccup, he managed to keep his car on track, learning a valuable lesson in the process.

The Brazilian rookie concluded his remarks by acknowledging the difficulties of the track and the intense competition among the drivers. He reiterated that despite the challenges and the high stakes, he’s determined to push his vehicle to the limits. His first-ever F1 qualifying session, despite its ups and downs, has shown that Bortoleto is a talent worth watching.
