Rookie F1 Driver Bortoleto Responds to Red Bull’s Marko Critique: A Promising Start at Australian Grand Prix

Formula 1 rookie, Gabriel Bortoleto, has made an indomitable first impression at the Australian Grand Prix, responding assertively to Red Bull’s Helmut Marko’s evaluation of him. Despite Sauber’s disappointing finish in the 2024 season and predictions of starting this year with a less competitive car, Bortoleto remains undeterred.

During the first media day of the 2025 season in Melbourne, Bortoleto was quizzed about Marko’s recent remarks on Servus TV where he categorized the new drivers. Marko labeled the Formula 2 champion a “B driver”, provoking doubts about his “absolute final speed” and raising questions over his F2 and Formula 3 titles due to his lack of numerous race wins.

Responding to this, a defiant Bortoleto said, “I don’t care. I love challenges. Helmut has both rightly and wrongly predicted talents in Formula 1. I’m hopeful that I will prove him wrong in due course.” He further stressed that media comments would not sway Marko’s opinion; only his track performance would. “I’m sure I’ll prove him wrong at some point and hopefully he will admit this,” he added.

Bortoleto’s confidence and charismatic demeanor have already shown him to be well-equipped to handle the intense scrutiny that comes with F1. His response to Marko’s jibe, both respectful and firm, showcased his composure, intelligence, and personality, traits highly praised by those who have worked closely with him. These attributes will be crucial if Sauber faces challenges in this season.

Bortoleto’s journey in F1 is just beginning, and with limited testing, he is on a steep learning trajectory. The toughest task of any rookie awaits him, including external scrutiny, potential internal politics, and the risk of bearing the brunt of Audi’s dissatisfaction with Sauber’s performance.

However, Bortoleto’s resilience seems unwavering. His teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, has already expressed admiration for him, describing him as a “very bright, switched on guy” who is “really hungry for information, pays a lot of attention, works really hard.”

Fernando Alonso, whose management team represents Bortoleto, also lauded his dedication, professionalism, and mature approach to racing. “He deserves to be in Formula 1 and hopefully a long career here and successful,” Alonso said. Despite being a rookie, Bortoleto has emerged as the best among his peers.

Although Bortoleto’s car may not match his counterparts’ results in his first year, Alonso hopes people will remember his achievements in the past two years. As Bortoleto embarks on his F1 journey, his resolve and determination to prove his naysayers wrong will indeed make this season one to watch.
