Romain Grosjean Joins Prema Racing as Reserve Driver: The Phoenix Finds New Wings in IndyCar

Romain Grosjean, the charismatic “Phoenix” of motorsport, has secured a crucial role with Prema Racing as its reserve driver for the 2025 IndyCar season. After a turbulent yet remarkable journey through Formula 1 and IndyCar, Grosjean is stepping into a pivotal position that combines experience, resilience, and a wealth of on-track wisdom.

With Callum Ilott and Robert Shwartzman locked in as Prema’s full-time drivers, Grosjean’s role might not involve weekly races, but his impact will be felt across the team. Here’s why this move is not just a safety net for Prema but a potential game-changer for their inaugural IndyCar campaign.

From Formula 1 Fire to IndyCar Heroics

Grosjean’s racing odyssey began in Formula 1, where he competed from 2009 until his dramatic exit in 2020 after surviving a fiery crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix. The incident not only redefined his career but also cemented his image as a fighter and survivor.

In 2021, he transitioned to IndyCar, initially driving part-time for Dale Coyne Racing. Grosjean’s debut season was nothing short of electric: two podium finishes and a stunning pole position at the Indianapolis road course. This performance earned him a coveted seat at Andretti Autosport, where he spent two seasons, followed by a stint at Juncos Hollinger Racing in 2024.

Despite flashes of brilliance, Grosjean’s time at Andretti and Juncos was marked by inconsistency. His best season finish of 13th in the standings came with Andretti in 2022 and 2023. However, his 2024 run with Juncos, which he described as one of his best years despite finishing 17th overall, demonstrated his enduring drive and adaptability.

Why Prema Racing Needs Grosjean

Prema Racing, the newest team on the IndyCar grid, is embarking on its debut season with Ilott and Shwartzman. While both drivers are immensely talented, they lack the extensive IndyCar experience that Grosjean brings. Here’s why Grosjean’s role as a reserve driver is invaluable:

  1. Proven IndyCar Expertise
Grosjean’s knowledge of the tracks, cars, and race dynamics makes him an ideal backup. If Ilott or Shwartzman are unable to race, Grosjean’s ability to step in and deliver competitive results is unmatched.
  2. Mentorship for Shwartzman
With Shwartzman entering his rookie IndyCar season, Grosjean’s guidance could prove pivotal. His recent on-track experience and familiarity with the series’ nuances will help fast-track Shwartzman’s development.
  3. Synergy with the Team
Grosjean has already worked indirectly with Prema during his tenure in Lamborghini’s sportscar program, making him a natural fit. His camaraderie with Ilott and shared history with key team personnel like engineer Steve Barker adds a layer of cohesion to the team.
  4. Critical Thinking in Sim Work
Grosjean’s adaptability and technical acumen will make him a valuable asset during simulator sessions, where he can provide insights without tailoring setups exclusively to his driving style.
  5. Box Office Appeal
Grosjean’s story—overcoming adversity and reinventing himself—continues to resonate with fans. His presence not only boosts Prema’s credibility but also its marketability.

The Phoenix and the Future

Prema Racing enters a fiercely competitive IndyCar grid, and having Grosjean as part of their lineup provides both stability and flair. While his full-time racing days may be behind him for now, Grosjean remains a dynamic force in the paddock.

Whether he’s called upon to step into a race seat or providing crucial feedback behind the scenes, Grosjean’s presence ensures that Prema will be prepared for any challenge. And as motorsport history has shown, second chances often lead to the most extraordinary stories.

Grosjean’s journey, from surviving a harrowing crash to revitalizing his career in IndyCar, reminds us all that resilience and reinvention are at the heart of racing—and life itself.
