Robin Raikkonen’s rise: could Kimi’s son be Ferrari’s next F1 superstar?

Is Kimi Raikkonen’s Son the Next Big Thing for Ferrari?

The buzz surrounding the budding motorsport prodigy Robin Raikkonen is reaching a fever pitch! As the son of legendary Formula 1 champion Kimi Raikkonen, the young karting sensation is already making waves, and former F1 star David Coulthard is convinced that he could be steering a Ferrari in the not-so-distant future.

Since hanging up his racing gloves after the 2021 season, Kimi has kept a relatively low profile, but he recently made headlines by attending the 2025 Italian Grand Prix with his family, including his talented son, Robin. This 10-year-old dynamo is not just riding on his father’s coattails; he’s carving out his own legacy in the world of karting. His achievements have gained significant traction on social media, particularly through his Instagram account, @aceraikkonen, where fans can see him celebrating podium finishes from various karting events in places like Wohlen and Jesolo.

Robin has already showcased his daring spirit and competitive nature, racing against older drivers at the Bira Circuit International Pattaya in Thailand. Despite finishing eighth after a challenging start from P2, his determination was evident. Recently, he was spotted having a blast drifting on a frozen lake in Finland, proving that the young athlete not only loves the thrill of racing but also knows how to enjoy life.

During a recent episode of The Red Flags podcast, Coulthard couldn’t help but draw attention to Robin’s potential. “Kimi was just a great talent, just a super fast, natural talent, so respect to that,” he remarked, hinting at the possibility of Kimi making a return to the F1 paddock, fueled by his son’s ascent through the ranks. “His son is coming up through karting, so I would not be surprised to see Kimi back, reluctantly, in the paddock, because probably his son will be in Formula 1.”

The Raikkonen family’s move to Italy—a country synonymous with motorsport—has only enhanced Robin’s prospects. Coulthard noted that Kimi is now living in Italy, which allows Robin to immerse himself in the racing culture, crucial for any driver aspiring to reach the pinnacle of motorsports. “He’s basically living there, so his son is at the track all the time…to really guide them through, you need to be on track all of the time, which is financially not viable for the majority of people, right?” he explained.

In a candid interview at Monza in 2024, Kimi shared insights into their family life and Robin’s karting journey. “We moved to Italy, I’ve been a mechanic for Robin as he settles into karting,” Kimi said, adding that the family is bustling with activity, with his daughter Rianna involved in gymnastics and the youngest, Grace, keeping them on their toes. “But it’s been great. He’s enjoying it. Everything is going nicely. We’ll see. If something comes or not, who knows? But he’s having fun—that’s the main thing.”

With Kimi Raikkonen being Ferrari’s last world drivers’ champion, winning the title in 2007, the notion of Robin donning the iconic red overalls is tantalizing. His father was let go from Ferrari in 2009, only to return in 2014, securing one last victory at the 2018 United States Grand Prix. While it may seem premature to predict a future Ferrari star at such a young age, Robin is undoubtedly in the right circles and competing in the right arenas to ascend through the F1 feeder series.

As fans eagerly await the next chapter in the Raikkonen legacy, one thing is clear: the world of Formula 1 may just be on the brink of welcoming an exciting new talent. Can Robin Raikkonen rise to the occasion and fulfill the high expectations set by his father’s legendary name? Only time will tell, but the racing world is watching closely!
