Robert Wickens Battles Adversity and Triumphs in Long Beach Debut with Corvette

Robert Wickens: A Story of Resilience and Redemption at Long Beach

In a riveting display of determination and grit, Robert Wickens made his IMSA SportsCar Championship return at Long Beach, marking his debut in the GTD class. Despite facing mixed feelings, Wickens displayed unwavering pride in his team’s achievements.

The #36 Corvette Z06 GT3.R driver expressed disappointment with the result but stood tall in pride for what they had accomplished. Wickens, whose last IMSA appearance was at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2017 before a life-altering IndyCar accident, faced a challenging weekend marred by qualifying setbacks.

During the intense qualifying session, Wickens encountered a hurdle in the form of the Inception Racing #70 Ferrari 296 GT3, resulting in minor front-right suspension damage to his car. Despite the setback, Wickens qualified eighth on the grid with a fastest lap time of 1:18.411, setting the stage for a race filled with obstacles and opportunities for redemption.

DXDT Racing, adopting a unique strategy, opted to change all four tires during the pit stop, a decision that diverged from their competitors. Wickens, utilizing hand-controls for braking, acceleration, and gear changes, showcased remarkable teamwork during the swift driver change, executed in just 18.7 seconds.

As the race unfolded, Wickens handed over the reins to teammate Tommy Milner, a double IMSA GTLM champion, who navigated the challenges with skill and precision. Despite facing a black flag for repairs, the team’s spirits remained high, emphasizing the positive takeaways from the weekend.

Looking ahead, Wickens is set to compete in the upcoming Course de Monterey at Laguna Seca, poised for another thrilling sprint race on May 11. As Wickens reflects on his Long Beach debut, a narrative of resilience and redemption emerges, underscoring his unwavering spirit and determination in the face of adversity.

Stay tuned for more updates on Wickens’ remarkable journey in the IMSA SportsCar Championship, where each race serves as a testament to his indomitable will and unyielding passion for the sport.
