The Formula 1 universe is abuzz with anticipation as one of the most promising new talents, Oliver Bearman, prepares to make his full debut at the 2025 Australian Grand Prix. The young prodigy has shown no sign of shying away from competition, revealing that he’s set his sights on three-time world champion Max Verstappen.

Bearman, joining the ranks as a rookie for Haas, has already captivated the attention of the F1 world. As the engines rev up in Melbourne, he divulged his eagerness to compete against Verstappen above all other experienced drivers on the circuit this season.

When asked about his top competitor, Bearman didn’t hesitate to name Verstappen. “If I’m racing against him, it means I’m doing pretty well!” he chuckled, during a press interaction in Melbourne. However, he emphasized his respect for all drivers, particularly those he grew up admiring, including Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton.

The 19-year-old phenom also shared a light-hearted anecdote about his repeated run-ins with Hamilton during his stint as a Ferrari reserve driver. He joked about always ending up racing Hamilton, adding, “If I can get near him this year, it means the car’s pretty quick, which would be a good sign.”

Despite his youth, Bearman has already accumulated invaluable experience operating both Ferrari and Haas machines. He temporarily replaced Carlos Sainz and Kevin Magnussen last season, gaining crucial insights. Yet, he acknowledges there’s much more to learn, especially understanding the VF-25’s performance under qualifying conditions.

In reference to the recent pre-season testing in Bahrain, Bearman noted, “I’m excited to see how the car behaves on lower fuel. Due to a few issues and problems, I didn’t get the chance to do that yet. It was quite disappointing to leave the test without any low fuel laps.”

The Australian Grand Prix is an opportunity for Bearman to gauge the VF-25’s adaptability. Albert Park’s circuit layout significantly differs from Bahrain’s abrasive track, providing an interesting challenge. Bearman added, “Seeing how the car adjusts to this track and its performance will be crucial. If we can start strong in P1 and maintain a good balance, it suggests that the car will perform well across different types of tracks.”

Bearman is also cognizant of Melbourne’s warmer climate, which could affect tire behavior and overall balance. He hopes to achieve a satisfactory balance right from the start, allowing him to focus on fine-tuning the car.

As Bearman sets his sights on racing against industry heavyweights, his approach exhibits a blend of ambition and maturity. He understands that competing against Hamilton and Verstappen would not only be a dream come true but also a testament to Haas’s capability to deliver a robust and competitive car. Undoubtedly, Bearman is a name to watch in the upcoming Formula 1 season.
