Estrela em ascensão da McLaren agora enfrenta uma decisão.

Jake Hughes achieved his first podium in Formula E in Shanghai, which was a long-awaited validation of his talent. Throughout his second season in Formula E, Hughes showed glimpses of his potential, but unfortunate incidents prevented him from achieving the results he deserves. One of these incidents occurred in Berlin, where he was in a promising position before contact with another car ruined his chances. However, there were races where everything came together for Hughes, such as Misano and Shanghai, where he demonstrated his speed and skill.

After reflecting on his performance in Shanghai, Hughes realized that he needed to adopt a more aggressive approach in group races. He consulted his engineer and received valuable input from his father, which helped him change his mindset. This change in approach paid off in the second race in Shanghai, where Hughes felt like a different driver behind the wheel.

Last season’s race in Portland highlighted the impressive performance of Nissan-powered cars. Despite qualifying well, Hughes learned a valuable lesson about the chaotic nature of group races. Similar incidents occurred this season in Berlin and the first race in Shanghai, but Hughes believes he now has the right balance between aggression and car positioning to stand out in these races. The next race in Portland, a less traction-sensitive circuit, presents an opportunity for Hughes to challenge the title contenders and surprise everyone.

Portland is crucial for Hughes and his team, as it may be their last chance to achieve a significant result this season. Although London’s traction-sensitive characteristics may not favor them, Hughes remains optimistic about his personal growth and ability to successfully navigate group races. He emphasizes the importance of staying in front or behind to save energy and avoid dangerous situations.

Outside of racing, Hughes has had a busy few months, celebrating his 30th birthday, proposing to his girlfriend, and witnessing his favorite football team, Aston Villa, qualify for the Champions League. Contract negotiations are also underway, and Hughes acknowledges that his strong performance in Shanghai came at the perfect time. While discussions with McLaren are ongoing, Hughes is open to exploring other options that may arise.

Hughes’s current position in his career is a testament to his perseverance and determination. After years of struggling to secure racing programs, he has developed a strong character that will shape him into a consistent and professional driver, just like his teammate Sam Bird. Hughes has the potential to follow a similar path to Bird, whether with a major manufacturer or by staying with the team he likes.

Ultimately, Hughes’s future is in his own hands, and he is ready to take the next step in his career. Discussions with McLaren will continue, and he remains optimistic about the outcome.
