In the face of biting remarks by Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s senior advisor, Sauber Formula 1 newcomer Gabriel Bortoleto has responded with a bold defiance ahead of his first appearance at the Australian Grand Prix. Bortoleto, a Brazilian racer, enters Sauber with an impressive track record, having secured consecutive rookie championships in both Formula 2 and 3.

Despite Bortoleto’s proven racing prowess, Marko has been anything but supportive, going as far as labeling the Sauber rookie a “B driver” during a conversation with Servus TV. Marko acknowledged Bortoleto’s intelligence but expressed skepticism about his raw speed.

When confronted with these derogatory comments during his inaugural media day as an F1 driver in Melbourne, Australia, Bortoleto remained resilient. “I don’t care,” he stated defiantly to a select group of media, including Motorsport Week. “I’ve seen that and I love challenges.”

Bortoleto, without mincing words, pointed out that Marko has had his fair share of hits and misses when it comes to talent identification in Formula 1. He confidently expressed his intent to prove Marko wrong and believes that his performance on the circuit will speak for itself.

The Sauber rookie confidently stated his track record, pointing out his title victories in the junior categories where he outperformed several of Marko’s Red Bull junior prospects. “I’m proud of what I did in the junior series and I won in F2 and F3 against the Red Bull drivers he has, so good for me,” Bortoleto retorted.

Two noteworthy figures in the F1 paddock, Nico Hulkenberg, Bortoleto’s teammate, and manager Fernando Alonso, vouch for Bortoleto’s potential. Hulkenberg, reflecting on pre-season testing, described Bortoleto as a “really nice guy, a smart kid, fast as hell.” He also lauded Bortoleto’s quick learning curve and is eager to work alongside him.

Alonso, who represents Bortoleto through his A14 Management group, has consistently praised the young racer, highlighting his dedication and professionalism. Alonso believes that Bortoleto is the top talent among this year’s F1 rookies and deserves a long and successful career in Formula 1.

All eyes are now on Bortoleto as he makes his debut in the Formula 1 arena. Whether he can live up to the high expectations or succumb to Marko’s scathing critique remains to be seen. Regardless, Bortoleto’s determination and passion for the sport are undeniable, and he is ready to let his performance on the track do the talking.
