“Right Time, Right Move”: Rob Marshall Reflects on Red Bull Departure and McLaren Resurgence

After an illustrious 17-year tenure at Red Bull Racing, Rob Marshall, one of Formula 1’s most influential engineers, made a career-defining leap to McLaren at the start of 2024. The decision, which might have seemed surprising to some, has already proven transformative—not just for Marshall but for McLaren, which celebrated its first Constructors’ Championship in 26 years under his guidance.

The Call That Changed Everything

In a candid interview, Marshall revealed that the timing of McLaren’s approach was pivotal:

“From a personal point of view, they [McLaren] asked me at the right time. I was at a point where I thought, ‘if I don’t move to another team now, I’m probably here forever.’”

While Marshall cherished his time at Red Bull—helping shape its era of dominance—he admitted he had grown too comfortable:

“It was all a bit slick… I think I was finding stuff a bit too easy, a bit too comfortable. And then the phone rings, and for some reason, you just can’t say no.”

Leaving Red Bull the Right Way

Despite the competitive nature of Formula 1, Marshall emphasized the importance of parting with Red Bull amicably:

“I’m really happy that I left Red Bull the right way. You don’t want to leave anywhere in the lurch. They’ve clearly been able to manage without me, which is great for them.”

His legacy at Red Bull is secure, but Marshall’s excitement for McLaren’s future is palpable:

“I’m really enjoying it here now, as much as I did in my first few years at Red Bull—the fun part.”

McLaren: From “Grey Place” to Championship Glory

Marshall’s move coincided with McLaren’s resurgence, a turnaround led by the leadership duo of Andrea Stella and Zak Brown, whom he credits for transforming the team’s culture:

“From the outside, for many years, McLaren was considered just a grey place where grey people went to work… But it’s definitely not like that now. The atmosphere is brilliant.”

Marshall’s praise for Stella and Brown was effusive:

“Andrea is an inspirational leader, but genuinely cares for everyone. Zak just makes me laugh every time I speak to him. He’s so charismatic and enthusiastic.”

Looking Ahead

Under Marshall’s direction, McLaren has re-established itself as a championship contender, a feat many considered improbable just a few years ago. Reflecting on his journey, Marshall is optimistic about the road ahead:

“This move was the challenge I needed, and it’s been incredibly rewarding. McLaren feels alive again, and being part of that revival is something truly special.”

As McLaren gears up for the 2025 season, one thing is clear: Rob Marshall’s “right time” decision may very well shape the next golden era for the team.
