After a challenging 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season, Richard Childress Racing (RCR) is revamping its operations for 2025 with a bold move to field a third car for multiple races. The third entry will feature various drivers, reflecting a strategic effort to bounce back and rebuild after a year of struggles.
RCR managed only one victory in 2024, a controversial triumph at Richmond, but neither of its full-time drivers made the playoffs. With mistakes on and off the track costing the team crucial opportunities, the expansion is seen as a pivotal step toward regaining competitiveness.
New Drivers, New Opportunities
One confirmed driver for the third car is reigning Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen, who will compete in two events next season. Van Gisbergen has also expressed interest in taking on the Chicago Street Race, a track he has shown particular enthusiasm for. The rest of the driver lineup for the third car will be announced in due course, adding intrigue to RCR’s 2025 campaign.
The additional entry is expected to provide fresh data and bolster the team’s overall performance by giving its lineup exposure to different circuits and competition dynamics.
Crew Chief Shuffle: A Key to Success
To support this expansion, RCR has made significant changes to its crew chief lineup, appointing Andy Street as the crew chief for the third team. Street previously worked with Austin Hill and brings a wealth of experience that team owner Richard Childress hopes will strengthen the team’s foundation:
“Andy Street brings a wealth of knowledge to our NASCAR Cup Series program as we continue to evaluate ways to build a deeper bench and promote from within. This move gives Andy the chance to gain NextGen experience and have a bigger opportunity on the Cup side while still contributing to our Xfinity Series program and working with our alliance partners.”
Additionally, Chad Haney will take over as Austin Hill’s new crew chief, while Danny Stockman remains as crew chief for Jesse Love in the Xfinity Series.
A Long-Term Vision
RCR’s decision to field a third Cup car and shuffle its leadership is not just about short-term gains. The team is investing in a future-focused strategy, aiming to build depth and strengthen its position within NASCAR. The third car will also allow the team to further adapt to the Next-Gen car regulations while giving emerging talent and seasoned drivers an opportunity to contribute to the team’s resurgence.
Looking Ahead to 2025
The introduction of the third car and the presence of drivers like Shane van Gisbergen offer exciting possibilities for RCR as it seeks to return to playoff contention. With the team’s Hall of Fame owner, Richard Childress, steering a forward-thinking strategy, fans and competitors alike will be watching to see how this expanded effort shapes RCR’s future in the NASCAR Cup Series.
