Formula 1 driver for RB, Daniel Ricciardo, praised the team for their calm approach in dealing with the controversy of team orders at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Yuki Tsunoda was unhappy when asked to let Ricciardo pass to challenge Kevin Magnussen of Haas for 12th place. Despite initial resistance, Tsunoda eventually allowed his teammate to overtake. Both drivers had different opinions on the matter, with Ricciardo stating that it had been discussed before the race, while Tsunoda sought clarification. Before the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Ricciardo revealed that the team had addressed the incident privately and resolved the issue. They had a discussion to clarify things and ensure that situations like this are handled properly in the future.
During the cool-down lap, Tsunoda expressed his frustration by aggressively overtaking Ricciardo and making contact with him. Ricciardo admitted he was surprised by Tsunoda’s actions and had to control his own response to avoid making public comments. He acknowledged that the team handled the situation well after the race, gathering both drivers to address any lingering issues and ensure everything was resolved.
“It was an experience where we left that room feeling like all divisions and emotions had dissipated, and any feelings of being treated unfairly or harboring animosity were non-existent.
“In that sense, none of those feelings can be considered. The team, in my opinion, handled the situation very carefully afterwards. It is crucial to remember that this is only the first race and allowing any of these issues to persist would not benefit the team in the future. Therefore, it was imperative to address and resolve the issue promptly.
“I am at a stage in my career where I don’t need someone to console me and express remorse for the incident. Instead, I take a broader perspective. This team is relatively new in certain aspects and, considering the length of the season, it is clear that nurturing these small rivalries from the beginning will not be advantageous. Therefore, it was vital for us to address the issue in a mature way and clarify things.
“The discussion was conducted calmly, without raised voices or confrontations. We approached it like adults, seeking a solution.”
In addition to a revamped identity, the Faenza-based team also welcomed a new team principal, Laurent Mekies, who took over from the retired Franz Tost.
RB also hired former Alpine sporting director Alan Permane, and Ricciardo was impressed with how the new management handled an internal matter.
“To be honest, I was curious to see how they would handle it because race drivers can be quite stubborn,” he acknowledged. “Yes, we have our moments when we might think, ‘Oh forget it, I’ll just walk away and let them sort it out.’
“But the fact that we were taken into a room and had a calm and peaceful discussion about it, without assigning blame, was really important. It was about addressing the issue so that when we left that room, we felt calm and ready to move on without any lasting effects from this incident. That was a positive outcome.
“Obviously, I knew there would be questions about it. But honestly, since Saturday night, we haven’t discussed it anymore.”
When asked how Mekies handled the complexity of the situation, Ricciardo replied: “He handled it very well. I think the start of this new chapter has been very positive.
“I appreciate the way he communicates with us, promoting an open dialogue and making everyone feel included in the team. He is receptive to constructive criticism and does not waste time with unnecessary things. Even though I tend to ramble sometimes, he says: ‘dude, get straight to the point’. He encourages me to speak my mind without beating around the bush. Therefore, I appreciate his frankness.”
