Implications of Marquez’s move to Ducati.

Repercussões da mudança de Marquez para a Ducati.

The Dutch Grand Prix in Assen provided an opportunity for the main figures in the recent MotoGP rider market to share their perspectives. Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez discussed the events in Mugello, where Ducati initially favored Martin for their second seat in the factory team in 2025, but chose Marquez instead. Maverick Vinales explained his decision to reject Aprilia’s offer, and Marco Bezzecchi talked about his move to Aprilia despite initial reluctance. Aleix Espargaro also shared his thoughts as an involved observer. Here’s everything we learned about these off-track developments.

Before the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello, it seemed likely that Martin would join Ducati’s factory team next season, while Marquez would stay with Gresini. However, within a few days, Marquez was confirmed as Bagnaia’s teammate, and Martin decided to join Aprilia. Martin expressed his frustration at being overlooked once again, especially after leading the championship.

Marquez’s intention was not initially to secure a seat in the factory team, but to ensure he had the latest factory bike for the next year. He made it clear that he wanted the 2025 Ducati, whether in the factory team or the Gresini team. Marquez remained firm in his decision and ultimately got the bike he desired.

When Aprilia signed Martin without informing his current teammate Vinales, it could have been seen as a slight that led to Vinales’ move to KTM. However, Vinales stated that his decision to leave had already been made weeks before due to the inconsistency of the RS-GP. The timing of Martin’s announcement may have influenced Vinales’ quick decision to secure a deal with Tech3 KTM, but it was not the determining factor.

Espargaro played a role in Martin’s hiring by Aprilia, just as he did when Vinales made his mid-season move. Espargaro was pleased to have his “best friend and championship leader” riding his bike next year. He explained how Martin considered his options and had doubts, but ultimately chose Aprilia after spending time with Espargaro discussing technical issues and seeing how happy Espargaro was with Aprilia.

Martin insisted that Espargaro had no influence on his decision and that he made the choice based on his own feelings. He wanted to be happy with his decision, as that’s when he performs best.

Bezzecchi had to break the news to his childhood hero and teammate Rossi that he would be leaving the VR46 Ducati team for a seat on the official Aprilia team. Fortunately, Rossi understood and was happy for Bezzecchi. The decision to leave was different from last year when Bezzecchi chose to stay with Rossi’s team on an old bike. This time, it was a chance to join a full factory team.

Ducati’s decision to create a championship-winning factory team with Bagnaia and Marquez resulted in the departures of Martin, Bezzecchi, and Pramac. This balanced the MotoGP field and will make the championship more interesting, according to Espargaro. KTM and Aprilia will be strong competitors with motivated riders, while Ducati will lose two bikes.
