Renault is ready to start development work on a more affordable version of the electric Twingo.
According to the ” Reuters” agency, the start of production of the model that aims to rival Chinese competition is scheduled for 2026, that is, within two years.
“Reuters”, citing sources close to the French brand, reports that Ampere, Renault’s electric vehicle unit, will now begin selecting suppliers, developing prototypes, and scaling production.
It is worth noting that Renault has been working to reduce the average development time of its models, which is about five years for traditional manufacturers. In this sense, the fully electric Megane was developed in four years and the R5 100% electric, which will be on sale later this year, was developed in three years.
To speed up the launch of the Twingo, everything indicates that the model will have a reduced number of parts by 20%, making use of more generic components and giving priority to parts already available from suppliers, as recently stated by Gilles Le Borgne, Renault’s chief technology officer, to the French newspaper Les Echos.
Recorde-se que a Renault confirmou em novembro de 2023, que vai lançar a nova geração do Twingo em 2026, com uma motorização exclusivamente elétrica, com base numa plataforma desenvolvida pela Ampere.
