Renault Filante: laboratório sobre rodas pronto para bater recorde de autonomia

Renault has unveiled the Filante, a demo electric car aimed at maximizing energy efficiency to set a new record. This “laboratory on wheels” is a demonstration vehicle that embodies audacity and innovation by merging Renault’s rich heritage with a futuristic vision of electric mobility.

Inspired by the legendary 40 CV Des Records (1925-1926), Nervasport Des Records (1934), and Etoile Filante (1956), this single-seater, which appears sculpted by air, combines style with exceptional aerodynamic efficiency and cutting-edge technologies, further reinforcing Renault’s commitment to innovation and more sustainable, efficient mobility.

The Renault Filante measures 5.12 meters in length, 1.19 meters in height, and weighs 1 ton, equipped with a battery of the same capacity as that used by the Scenic E-Tech, at 87 kWh, developed by Ampere, and features cells integrated directly. Thanks to this technique, the battery pack is not only lighter but also allows for optimization of its shape and the available space.

Another of the key aspects for reducing the weight of this Renault demonstration vehicle was the use of lighter materials in the bodywork, specifically the use of carbon fiber and a special high-strength aluminum created through the 3D printing process, which minimizes waste and allows for the creation of parts with greater precision.

Contributing to this is a chassis made of composite material that combines aluminum, carbon, and steel, ideally structured to reduce the sections of the components to the minimum necessary to withstand mechanical stresses while maintaining maximum solidity.

This selection of materials has allowed the Filante to be lighter without compromising the robustness of the chassis, a crucial factor in ensuring the vehicle’s stability on the circuit.

For the “diet” of this Renault Filante, the steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire systems also contributed, replacing traditional mechanical control mechanisms with fully electronic solutions, providing a more complete driving experience and reducing the number of mechanical components while further optimizing efficiency.

The Renault demonstration vehicle is equipped with specially designed 19” Michelin tires to maximize performance and provide great autonomy, promising to reduce energy losses due to friction. Additionally, the suspension arms have a shape that enhances airflow.

Inside, the cabin is inspired by aviation and the aerospace industry, where every detail has been designed to maximize efficiency and comfort. In this refined environment, all controls feature a design that prioritizes ergonomics and weight reduction.

Additionally, the driver’s seat is a type of canvas, similar to a net, that adapts to the body, which according to Renault provides the driver with a sensation of merging with the vehicle. This futuristic seat is supported by thin carbon blades. The driving position is inspired by Formula 1 and allows for a combination of ergonomics and visibility.

“We designed this vehicle as an authentic sculpture in motion. The lines, inspired by combat aircraft and speed records from the last century, evoke a pursuit of efficiency and elegance. Every surface has been meticulously crafted to capture light and highlight a silhouette that seems to merge into the air. The blue crystals and color harmonies reinforce this vision while the overall design expresses lightness and fluidity.”, said Sandeep Bhambra, design director of Renault and Ampere.

The Renault Filante demonstration model will be displayed at the Rétromobile show in Paris, which takes place from February 5 to 9, before embarking on a quest for an efficiency record that will occur at the end of the first semester.
