Renault CEO Luca de Meo faces Alpine F1 upheaval amid pivotal exit

Renault’s Shake-Up: Uncertain Future for Alpine’s F1 Team

As the Renault Group faces a major shake-up with the departure of CEO Luca de Meo, the future of Alpine’s Formula 1 team hangs in the balance. De Meo, the mastermind behind the rebranding of the team to Alpine in 2021, will be stepping down from his role, leaving many unanswered questions in his wake.

One of the most significant changes following De Meo’s exit is the role of Flavio Briatore, the controversial former Benetton and Renault F1 boss, who was brought in as an executive advisor by De Meo. Briatore, who recently assumed additional team principal responsibilities, has reassured the staff of Renault’s continued support despite the leadership transition.

With uncertainties looming over the team’s leadership and strategic direction, the immediate focus is on maintaining stability during the transition period. While new recruitments are expected to bolster the team in the short term, the long-term vision will be shaped by the incoming Renault CEO.

Under De Meo’s leadership, Renault made significant changes, including rebranding the F1 team as Alpine and transitioning to a Mercedes customer for its engines in 2026. The impending leadership change raises speculations about the team’s future ownership and strategic direction.

As the Renault Group owns 76% of the team, questions arise about potential changes in ownership structure under the new leadership. Despite assurances from De Meo about retaining ownership, the decision will no longer be in his hands, leaving the team’s future uncertain.

Briatore’s role in the team’s future is also under scrutiny, as he navigates the corporate landscape independently of the Renault and Alpine structures. His ability to rally support and restore the team’s competitiveness will be closely monitored by the board and the new CEO.

Amidst the leadership turmoil, Alpine finds itself at the bottom of the championship standings, highlighting the urgent need for strategic interventions to revive the team’s performance on the track. The decisions taken in the coming months will be critical in shaping the future of Renault’s F1 entry.

As the dust settles from De Meo’s exit, all eyes are on the Renault Group and its new leadership to steer Alpine towards success in the fiercely competitive world of Formula 1.
