Renault is set to revive the iconic Renault 5 Turbo from the 1980s as a 100% electric sports car with a power output of over 500 hp.
The small but powerful hatchback will feature rear-wheel drive, much like its predecessor from the 1980s. However, the original model’s 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which produced around 160 hp, will be replaced by two electric motors mounted on the rear wheels, providing instantaneous power to each wheel for a combined total of over 500 hp.
Behind the wheel, Renault promises that drivers will experience the thrill of lightning-fast acceleration, as the 100% electric model boasts a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 3.5 seconds, a performance worthy of a supercar or even a hypercar.
The Renault Group states that it is applying the best of its skills and knowledge in the development of this brand icon.
In terms of aesthetics, this Renault 5 Turbo 3E features a muscular body where the rear doors of its predecessor are eliminated to make way for side air vents. Note also the 20″ wheels that enhance the sporty look of this new 100% electric model from Renault.
To showcase the new model, the French brand took advantage of the new documentary series on Prime Video, debuting this Friday, December 13, “Anatomy of a Comeback,” which tells the story of how the Renault Group turned things around and overcame a crisis that exceeded anything previously seen in this sector.
On the brink of collapse in the early 2020s, the company launched the “Renaulution,” a unique transformation roadmap in the automotive industry. A last-chance plan. With this documentary, the company opens its doors, offering a unique insight into its manufacturing secrets and the design of new models, such as the 100% electric Renault 5 E-Tech, and takes us to the paddock of the Alpine Formula 1 team.
Additionally, the French brand also shares the exclusive reveal of a new model. A true human adventure, filled with challenges, failures, and successes, seen through the eyes of those on the front lines.
For the first time in history, Renault will use a documentary to unveil a new production car. At the end of the fourth episode, there is a true surprise. Viewers follow Luca de Meo, CEO of the Renault Group, Fabrice Cambolive, CEO of the Renault brand, and Gilles Vidal, Vice President of Design, on a visit to the Design Department to see the future Renault 5 Turbo 3E, confirmed by Luca de Meo as a future production model.
In this way, forty-six years after the launch of the first Renault 5 Turbo, Renault will surprise enthusiasts with the rebirth of this sports icon.
