Red Bull’s Bold Move: The Quick Axing of Liam Lawson Stirs Controversy

In a dramatic twist within the high-octane world of Formula 1, Red Bull Racing has made headlines by swiftly retracting its decision to elevate Liam Lawson to the main team alongside Max Verstappen. The move, initially seen as a bold gamble, is now being labeled by Red Bull’s senior advisor, Helmut Marko, as a regrettable “mistake.”

Lawson, a rising star with only 11 Grand Prix starts under his belt, was chosen over Yuki Tsunoda for the 2025 season. However, after just two races, the team has opted for a dramatic reversal, reinstating Tsunoda ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix. This decision comes as the team grapples with challenges presented by their current RB21 car.

Experience Over Potential: Tsunoda’s Return

Christian Horner, Red Bull Team Principal, has emphasized the value of experience in the current scenario, stating that Tsunoda’s seasoned understanding of the sport would bring much-needed stability. The choice reflects a “duty of care” towards Lawson, whose initial performances have struggled under the intense pressure of top-tier competition.

Marko expressed his retrospective doubts, revealing that Lawson’s potential was overshadowed by an inability to cope with the escalating demands. “Yuki was too inconsistent, which led us to select Lawson. However, the intense environment proved too challenging for him,” Marko remarked, drawing an analogy to a “stricken boxer” unable to recover.

Technical Woes and Missed Opportunities

Lawson’s journey was marred by technical setbacks, notably a turbo issue during the Australian Grand Prix’s practice session. These challenges, coupled with underwhelming qualifying performances in both Australia and China, highlighted the young driver’s struggle to secure points. Meanwhile, Tsunoda showcased consistency, securing top-10 grid positions despite strategic hiccups affecting his overall score.

Marko noted a significant transformation in Tsunoda, attributing his resurgence to changes in management and a matured approach. “He’s a different Yuki now, ready to take the reins,” Marko stated, underscoring the Japanese driver’s newfound form.

Rebuilding Confidence: Lawson’s Next Chapter

Despite the setback, Red Bull remains committed to nurturing Lawson’s talent. The New Zealander will return to the familiar grounds of Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, a team where he previously excelled. Christian Horner stressed the necessity of this switch, stating, “We must act swiftly to allow Liam to regain his confidence and continue his progression in an environment he knows well.”

Team Principal Laurent Mekies is optimistic about Lawson’s return, highlighting the team’s eagerness to foster his growth. “Liam’s integration last year was seamless, and we are ready to support him in unleashing his potential,” Mekies affirmed.

This swift reshuffle underscores the relentless pace and high stakes of Formula 1, where teams must balance talent development with the immediate demands of competition. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on Lawson’s resurgence and Tsunoda’s performance as Red Bull recalibrates its strategy.
