In the opening session of the Formula 1 pre-season testing in Bahrain, Red Bull’s Liam Lawson emerged as a trailblazer, setting an uncompromising pace. Despite being just halfway through the session, Lawson’s performance was a testament to his mettle, taking the lead and leaving his competitors in the dust.

Earlier, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso had briefly held the lead, having posted a lap on medium C3 tyres that put him four hundredths ahead of Lawson. However, the Red Bull driver swiftly reclaimed the top spot just a minute after the two-hour mark of the four-hour session, with a sizable three tenths lead.

The spotlight was also on Red Bull’s brand-new RB21, which has already sparked curiosity due to its striking resemblance to the previous year’s RB20 model. The RB21, under Lawson’s command, demonstrated significant potency on the track. This was evident not just in the lap times, where Lawson outperformed his rivals despite running on hard C2 tyres, compared to the medium C3s used by most of the field, but also in the impressions made on the trackside.

Among the other contenders, Ferrari’s latest recruit, Lewis Hamilton, made his presence felt with a commendable performance. After leading the pack momentarily, Hamilton managed to secure the third position, trailing Lawson and Alonso. Other noteworthy performers included Yuki Tsunoda of Racing Bulls, Alex Albon from Williams, Alpine’s Jack Doohan, and Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg.

In a thrilling turn of events, the top four teams were separated by a mere half a second before Lawson accelerated his pace. The initial phase of the test saw all ten teams amass significant mileage, hovering around or surpassing the 20-lap mark.

Summing up the results: Lawson took the lead, followed by Alonso, Hamilton, Tsunoda, Albon, Doohan, Hulkenberg, Antonelli, Piastri, and Bearman, respectively.

This reshuffling of the leaderboard in the early stages of the pre-season testing in Bahrain has set the tone for an exciting Formula 1 season ahead. As our eyes remain glued to the track, we anticipate more adrenaline-fueled performances from these top-notch racers.
