Red Bull Racing Struggles to Keep Up with McLaren’s Dominance in F1 2025

In the high-octane world of Formula 1, the battle between Red Bull Racing and McLaren has reached a fever pitch in the 2025 season. While Max Verstappen showcases his prowess over a single lap, the full race distance seems to elude him and his Red Bull team when faced with the formidable McLaren cars.

The secret behind the smaller gaps in qualifying sessions lies in Verstappen’s exceptional driving skills, extracting every ounce of performance from the RB21. However, McLaren’s car, particularly challenging to handle over a single lap due to front axle unpredictability, poses a significant challenge for both Verstappen and his Red Bull counterpart.

Team boss Andrea Stella sheds light on McLaren’s strength in managing Pirelli tires, referring to it as the “black art” of F1. While McLaren excels in race simulations, Red Bull faces structural issues highlighted in races with high temperatures and significant tire wear, such as Bahrain and Miami.

Verstappen’s revelation about McLaren’s tire management prowess raises eyebrows, hinting at a potential advantage that competitors are eager to decipher. The focus shifts to McLaren’s brake system, with thermal images revealing intriguing insights into preventing tire overheating during races.

As Red Bull grapples to decode McLaren’s tire secret, the clock is ticking with the budget cap and the impending shift in focus towards the 2026 season. Understanding McLaren’s advantage could not only impact the remainder of the 2025 season but also lay the groundwork for future successes.

The upcoming changes in F1 regulations for 2026 add another layer of complexity, emphasizing the importance of grasping fundamental principles that can transcend across seasons. Red Bull acknowledges the need to enhance tire wear capabilities, crucial for Verstappen’s title aspirations and long-term competitiveness.

McLaren’s current dominance underscores the critical role of tire management in modern F1, positioning them as the masters of the “black art” in the sport. As the rivalry intensifies between Red Bull and McLaren, the quest for technological superiority and strategic prowess will define the trajectory of the 2025 season and beyond.
