Sergio Perez’s Red Bull Future in Doubt After “Horrible Weekend” at Mexican GP, Warns Christian Horner that hides the decision of Perez Future

The countdown to Sergio Perez’s fate at Red Bull Racing is nearing its climax. Amid swirling speculation, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has dropped a bombshell hint: a final decision on Perez’s future—and a potential replacement—could be announced as early as this week.

Perez on the Brink After Disastrous 2024 Campaign

Sergio Perez’s lackluster 2024 season has put him squarely in the firing line. Despite securing a two-year contract extension earlier in the season, his failure to deliver consistent results has forced Red Bull to rethink its driver lineup heading into 2025. While Max Verstappen soared to his fourth consecutive Drivers’ Championship, Perez’s struggles left the team vulnerable in the Constructors’ battle—ultimately ceding the title to McLaren.

Speaking to the media, Helmut Marko confirmed that discussions are actively underway. With his characteristic bluntness, Marko teased fans with a firm timeline:

“There are negotiations ongoing… And I am positive that there will be a decision and announcement this week.”

Liam Lawson or Yuki Tsunoda? Red Bull’s Future Taking Shape

While Perez’s Red Bull tenure hangs by a thread, two names have emerged as frontrunners to take his coveted seat: Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda.

Lawson, who impressed during his substitute appearances for AlphaTauri (now VCARB), has earned widespread praise for his composure and race craft. Sources close to the team suggest that Red Bull has already made its move, favoring the talented New Zealander as Perez’s replacement.

Yuki Tsunoda, meanwhile, remains a strong contender given his steady improvement and loyalty to the Red Bull system. Backed by Honda, Tsunoda brings valuable continuity to the team amid an evolving driver market.

Financial Complexity: The Weight of Perez’s Sponsors

A key subplot to Perez’s situation lies off the track: his financial clout. Backed by influential Mexican sponsors, Perez injects significant commercial value into Red Bull—a factor complicating the team’s decision-making process.

Helmut Marko acknowledged the unprecedented role of shareholders and sponsors in this negotiation, describing it as a “complex story.”

“It’s the first time the shareholders were involved,” Marko admitted. “But as I said, positive negotiations [are] ongoing. Be patient. I believe this week will be decisions and [the] announcement done.”

Red Bull must weigh the short-term financial benefits of keeping Perez against the long-term performance and championship aspirations of the team.

Red Bull’s 2024 Struggles: A Wake-Up Call

While Max Verstappen performed at an elite level yet again, Red Bull’s overall form in 2024 fell far short of expectations. Sergio Perez’s inconsistency amplified the team’s struggles, with missed podiums and lackluster qualifying performances preventing Red Bull from defending their Constructors’ crown.

For a team known for its ruthless pursuit of perfection, the decision to retain or replace Perez will signal their intent for 2025.

The Clock Ticks: Red Bull Fans Brace for Impact

As the winter break approaches, the Red Bull camp remains a hive of activity. If Helmut Marko’s timeline holds true, fans won’t have to wait long to discover whether Sergio Perez will remain Verstappen’s teammate—or if Red Bull will usher in a new era with Liam Lawson or Yuki Tsunoda.

For now, Perez remains confident, but with Marko’s cryptic yet definitive hints, the writing may already be on the wall.

Red Bull faces one of its toughest calls yet, but one thing’s for certain: an announcement is imminent, and it could change the trajectory of the team heading into 2025.
