Red Bull’s bold new era: team principal declares war on politics after F1 controversy

ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - DECEMBER 04: Laurent Mekies, Team Principal of Oracle Red Bull Racing talks with Pierre Wache, Technical Director of Oracle Red Bull Racing in the Paddock during previews ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi at Yas Marina Circuit on December 04, 2025 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Red Bull Racing’s New Era: Team Principal Vows to Eliminate Political Drama and Focus on Pure Racing

In a dramatic overhaul following the departure of Christian Horner, Red Bull Racing is embarking on a bold new chapter under the leadership of Laurent Mekies. After two decades of Horner’s reign—marked by remarkable championship victories and equally controversial political maneuvers—Mekies is determined to steer the team away from political games and back to the essence of racing.

Mekies, who stepped up from his previous role at Racing Bulls, has made it crystal clear: the focus will now be on performance, not politics. “It’s an incredibly competitive environment, and we believe that to be competitive here, you also need to enjoy what you are doing,” he stated emphatically. Red Bull’s new spirit embraces hard work and camaraderie, encapsulating what they call the “Red Bull spirit”—a commitment to racing excellence.

Earlier this year, the team faced a minor controversy when it was reported that mechanics were caught removing a piece of tape on the grid—an apparent reference point for rival driver Lando Norris. This episode raised eyebrows in the F1 community, but Mekies has swiftly acted to ensure such distractions will not occur again. “All we have done is to make sure that we can, as a group, concentrate on pure racing and not get too distracted by the noise around,” he remarked, signaling a clean break from any antics that don’t contribute directly to on-track success.

Mekies is laser-focused on enhancing performance, stating, “Do what we fundamentally love to do, which is to try to get these cars to go faster on the track.” With this renewed dedication, Red Bull aims to push the boundaries of racing while fostering an environment where enjoyment and competition coexist.

As the F1 season unfolds, the motorsports world will be watching closely to see how Mekies’ leadership transforms Red Bull Racing and whether this shift away from political maneuvering can propel the team to new heights. One thing is certain: Red Bull is ready to reclaim its glory with a fresh mindset and a relentless drive for speed.
