Vulnerability of Red Bull when driving over the curbs was not exposed in Barcelona. Red Bull has admitted that addressing the issue of the weakness of their car when going over the curbs, which has hindered their performance in several races this season, will not be a simple task. The team’s dominance under the new ground effect regulations has continued this season, with Max Verstappen securing four wins in the first six races. However, their competitors, including Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes, have made significant progress, and Red Bull’s advantage has been more threatened on circuits that require the car to absorb the curbs. Verstappen finished a distant sixth in Monte Carlo and revealed that the long-standing weakness has been exposed since the grid convergence. Recognizing that finding a solution will take time, Red Bull’s chief engineer, Paul Monaghan, agrees that there is no easy solution. When asked about the difficulty of addressing the issue in 2024, Monaghan replied, “Ask me at the end of the season or at the end of next season, and I will give a realistic answer.” He further explains, “It’s not impossible, but it won’t be easy. If it were easy, maybe we would have already solved it. The magnitude of the problem is evident when we compare our car to others. If it hits something, it launches the car in the air, just like ours.” The challenge for Red Bull is to make significant enough improvements to surpass their competitors, but whether they can achieve this remains unknown. Monaghan concludes, “We will continue to do our best in an incremental process, race after race, and see where it takes us.” Red Bull is not complacent with their leads in the championship and is determined to address any performance limitations in the car. According to Monaghan, they are continuously developing the car, making improvements race after race. They are focused on ensuring the car can handle different circuits, such as Hungary and Austria, and still have the best performance. While Verstappen has been successful in overcoming recent difficulties, Perez has faced a drop in form. He has scored only eight points in the last four races and attributes his poor performance to balance limitations. Monaghan acknowledges that providing the desired balance may depend on the circuit and that the upgrades have not necessarily resulted in faster lap times. However, the team is committed to maximizing the car’s potential and has a track record of pushing the limits of development.
