Red Bull’s bold transformation is underestimated in the conversation about the ‘Zero-pod’ concept.

Red Bull transformação ousada é subestimada na conversa sobre o conceito ‘Zero-pod’.

The Red Bull Formula 1 car for 2024 has a distinct appearance that sets it apart from previous designs discarded by Mercedes. The RB20 has caught the attention of the entire F1 community, surprising both rivals and Red Bull drivers. The visible changes, such as the unique interpretation of the sidepods and the Mercedes-inspired cannons on the engine cover, only scratch the surface of the car’s advancements. Daniel Ricciardo, during testing with the car, expressed his lack of surprise with Red Bull’s aggressive approach, stating that the team stands out when winning and aims to dominate the competition. Red Bull’s technical department believes that the origin of an idea does not determine its performance potential, allowing the possibility for others to improve their ideas or for Red Bull to find inspiration elsewhere. This mindset has motivated Red Bull to go beyond incremental changes and follow a bold and aggressive direction with their car to prevent others from catching up. The team’s strong understanding of the rules and their development tools have given them the confidence to take risks and pursue this new direction. Although the RB20 may have some similarities to previous Mercedes designs, the changes made for 2024 are extensive and will be the driving force behind the car’s performance. The internal components of the car are complex and significant, as shown in images with the bodywork removed. Even Jody Egginton, technical director of Red Bull’s sister team, was impressed with the packaging of the car. Red Bull’s philosophy for this car focuses on making the front end responsive without compromising the stability of the rear. Weight distribution and keeping components closer to the car’s centerline play a crucial role in achieving this balance. Red Bull’s intention is to reduce the car’s polar moment of inertia, improving its responsiveness in corners. The repackaging of radiators in the sidepods and the central placement of the cooling arrangement behind the airbox contribute to this goal. Red Bull’s intention to optimize aerodynamics also influenced the decision to shrink the sidepods, although more aggressive changes are still possible. The intricate details and fundamental architectural choices of the car differentiate it from Mercedes, making comparisons between the two misleading. The RB20 represents a risky revolution for Red Bull and, despite the exact inspiration or intention behind its design, it has already proven to be successful.
