The 2024 Formula 1 season has taken a dramatic turn as Red Bull’s once-dominant grip on the championship is loosening. Lando Norris, driving a surging McLaren, comfortably outpaced Max Verstappen to claim victory at the Dutch Grand Prix, marking a significant shift in the competitive landscape.
Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner has openly admitted that the team is coming to terms with their fading dominance. As the season progresses, both Horner and Verstappen are adjusting their strategies in light of the increasing threat from rivals like McLaren. The Dutch GP highlighted this reality, as Verstappen’s frustration was evident in his radio communications, revealing the growing pressure he faces.
Since their last victory at the Spanish Grand Prix in June, Red Bull has struggled to maintain their winning form. The once invincible Verstappen now finds himself in a winless streak not seen since 2021. Meanwhile, McLaren’s momentum has surged, with Norris securing his second victory of the season, leaving Red Bull to reassess their approach.
Reflecting on the situation, Horner acknowledged the challenge, stating, “I think he [Verstappen] accepted that Lando just had a quicker car, and actually saw that from Friday.” Horner emphasized that Verstappen’s focus was on minimizing the damage, ensuring he only conceded seven points to Norris rather than risking more.
During the race, Verstappen initially led after overtaking Norris at the start but quickly realized that the McLaren was the faster car. When Norris attempted to pass, Verstappen chose not to fight too hard, prioritizing the long game in the championship battle.
As the season heads into its final stretch, Horner highlighted the importance of keeping the championship in mind, stating, “If you can’t win, then you’ve got to be scoring the points.” Despite being beaten by a significant margin at Zandvoort, Horner remains optimistic, insisting that the team is focused on turning things around.
“We’re fortunate that McLaren wasn’t fully competitive at the start of the season,” Horner added, noting that the cushion of 70 points in the championship is far from secure. With Norris gaining confidence and momentum, Red Bull is under pressure to respond effectively in the remaining nine races.
The challenge for Red Bull is clear: maintain their lead and capitalize on every opportunity to stay ahead in both the Driver and Constructor Standings. As competition heats up, the team will need to bring their A-game to fend off the rapidly advancing McLaren and keep their championship hopes alive.
