Red Bull decides to keep Perez for F1 2025 – will it be premature?

Red Bull decide manter Perez para F1 2025 – será prematuro?

Sergio Perez has signed a new contract with Red Bull Formula 1 as Max Verstappen’s teammate for the 2025 season, and potentially for one more year after that. This decision comes at a peculiar time, as Perez’s form has been declining just as Red Bull’s rivals are closing in. The timing of the announcement raises questions about team harmony and Verstappen’s dominance in F1.

It’s hard to justify this decision solely based on competitiveness. It seems like Red Bull is prioritizing what makes Verstappen’s life easier, which may be their best chance for success. If this announcement had come earlier in the season, when Red Bull was doing well and Perez was effectively supporting Verstappen, it would have made more sense. However, the competitive landscape has changed and Red Bull is under more pressure, while Perez’s performance has declined.

Red Bull’s decision to renew with Perez seems to be motivated by factors beyond performance. It may be due to his close relationship with team boss Christian Horner, or a desire for continuity and stability. Red Bull may be counting on Verstappen being the clear number one driver and relying on both cars to secure championship titles. Whatever the reason, it is clear that Perez is getting this contract despite his recent form, not because of it.

Personally, I am surprised that Red Bull has chosen to stick with Perez. Although he has started the 2024 season better than the previous year, his inconsistency and inability to perform at Verstappen’s level are concerning. As the competition intensifies, Red Bull will face increasing pressure from Ferrari and McLaren. In a scenario like this, having the best pair of drivers is crucial, and Perez may not be the ideal choice. There were other options available, such as Fernando Alonso or Carlos Sainz, who could have been improvements over Perez.

By renewing with Perez, Red Bull is putting all their trust in Verstappen as the lead driver beyond 2025. However, there are no guarantees in Formula 1, and Verstappen’s competitive nature combined with potential changes in engine rules could pose challenges for Red Bull. While managing a team with Alonso or Sainz could have been challenging, keeping Perez does not guarantee a smooth dynamic either. This decision goes against Red Bull’s history of making bold and daring choices.

Perez may be the best option for Red Bull in terms of what they want from a driver. He understands his role as a clear number two and has the ability to support Verstappen effectively. Hiring someone like Sainz could have further damaged the team’s dynamics during these tough times. Therefore, it is better for Red Bull to stick with what they know and provide Perez with a car that suits him. If Verstappen encounters any setbacks, having Perez as a reliable scorer would be beneficial.

Having an obedient teammate can benefit star drivers, ensuring that focus is not divided and maximizing results. However, there are circumstances in which Verstappen may regret not having a stronger teammate. In a tight battle with McLaren or Ferrari, Perez’s inconsistency in qualifying could potentially impact Verstappen’s championship chances. Verstappen cannot drive both cars and, in tight situations, he would need a consistently reliable Perez or a stronger teammate who can challenge him.

Keeping Perez may make it difficult for Red Bull to win the constructors’ championship in 2025 if their rivals improve. However, it may be the simplest route for Verstappen to win another drivers’ title. Although Perez’s form fluctuations may leave Verstappen vulnerable, he is more than capable of fighting for the championship on his own. Additionally, the more balanced duos in rival teams will also take points away from each other, which will not happen at Red Bull.

Some may argue that the media and fans are being unfair to Perez, considering his achievements and the fierce competition he faces alongside Verstappen. However, the point is that Perez’s performance at Red Bull is known. While he has had some good days, there have also been times when he has failed to meet expectations. If Red Bull wants to remain competitive in a tight title fight, they may need to consider alternatives.

It is not unfair to say that Perez has had his time at Red Bull. He has had a great career, with podiums and championship success. However, if the competition tightens, he will need to be closer to Verstappen more often to continue achieving podiums at the same rate.
