Red Bull blasts online death threats against Kimi Antonelli after shocking Qatar GP incident

Red Bull Denounces Disturbing Death Threats Against Kimi Antonelli Following Qatar GP Fallout

In a shocking display of online vitriol, Red Bull has publicly condemned the vile death threats hurled at Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli after a dramatic turn of events during the Qatar Grand Prix. The chaos unfolded in the race’s final laps when Antonelli made a critical error, allowing Lando Norris to seize the opportunity and overtake him for fourth place—a move that not only earned Norris crucial championship points but also ignited an avalanche of hatred directed toward the young Italian.

The Incident: A Fatal Mistake or Just Racing? Antonelli was comfortably ahead of Norris until the penultimate lap when he lost control of his car, inadvertently giving Norris the chance to pass. This misstep shifted the points landscape, leaving Norris with a 12-point advantage over Max Verstappen, heightening tensions as the championship race heads into its climax in Abu Dhabi. In a disturbing revelation, Mercedes reported that their internal monitoring tools detected over 1,100 severe or suspicious comments on Antonelli’s social media accounts, including explicit death threats.

Red Bull Responds: A Call for Sanity The situation escalated when Helmut Marko, a prominent figure at Red Bull, suggested that Antonelli might have intentionally allowed Norris to overtake him, a claim that reverberated through the paddock and was echoed over the radio during the race. In a forceful statement, Red Bull clarified that “comments made before and immediately after the Qatar GP alleging that Kimi Antonelli deliberately allowed Lando Norris to pass are unequivocally incorrect.” They emphasized that video replays clearly show Antonelli losing control, thus clarifying the nature of the incident. The team expressed deep regret that this narrative contributed to the online harassment faced by the young driver.

Mercedes’ Strong Stance: No Room for Abuse Toto Wolff, the head of Mercedes, did not hold back in his condemnation of Marko’s insinuations, labeling them as “brainless” and “absurd.” Wolff firmly stated that Antonelli’s mistake was a result of racing pressure, not a calculated move to aid Norris. In a decisive move against the toxic culture surrounding the sport, Mercedes announced plans to present a dossier of the abusive comments to the FIA, aligning with their campaign “United Against Online Abuse,” aimed at combating the growing tide of hate speech in motorsport.

A Unified Front Against Online Hate In response to Red Bull’s clarifications, Mercedes took to social media to reiterate their stance: “Abuse is never acceptable. We appreciate the reinstatement of the truth. See you on track in Abu Dhabi.” This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dark side of competitive sports, where high stakes can lead to extreme reactions. As the F1 community rallies to protect its members from harassment, the eyes of the world remain fixed on the upcoming Abu Dhabi finale, where tensions will surely reach a boiling point.

In a sport that thrives on passion and rivalry, it’s imperative that respect prevails both on and off the track.
