Sergio Perez, from Mexico, competed in the Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo on May 23, 2024, for the Red Bull Racing team. The team principal, Christian Horner, acknowledged the need for Perez to deliver a consistent performance, as his rivals in Formula 1 pose a growing threat. Perez faced pressure at the start of the season due to his disappointing performance last year, where he failed to reach Q3 eight times and finished 290 points behind his teammate, Max Verstappen. However, Perez had a strong start this season, securing second places in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia as Red Bull continued to dominate. Unfortunately, he has struggled to maintain that momentum as the competition intensifies, finishing eighth in Imola and suffering a disastrous elimination in Q1 in Monaco. Perez’s early retirement after a collision with Kevin Magnussen and Verstappen’s sixth place resulted in Red Bull’s lead over Ferrari being reduced to 24 points. With Ferrari and McLaren winning races in the last month, Horner emphasized the importance of Perez bouncing back from his recent setback to strengthen Red Bull’s chances of winning the championship. Horner acknowledged the challenges Perez faced in Monaco, stating: “This weekend has been extremely tough for him. We need both cars to score points, as we cannot underestimate the threat of Ferrari and McLaren in both championships.” Despite Perez’s difficulties, Horner expressed confidence that his performance will not decline as it did last season. When asked how Red Bull can support Perez in regaining his form after a disappointing race in Monaco, Horner replied: “In the first six races, Checo was very strong. He qualified on the front row, finished second and third, and scored very well. We just need to help him regain that confidence and avoid any decline.” Regarding the decision on Perez’s future with the team for the 2025 season, Horner stated that it would not be affected by his recent performance and would be made at the right time. On the other hand, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko revealed that Perez is the top candidate to partner with Verstappen next season, with an announcement possibly being made next month. Marko said: “I believe we will have a clear picture by Barcelona. We should have a clear idea ourselves by then.” When asked if Perez was in the best position to secure the seat, Marko replied: “He is in a favorable position. I wouldn’t say he is the absolute favorite, but he is in a good position.”
